I bought a TDI and it has turned it self into a coal burning car the exhuast fumes are a black as you like. Being a discovery vergin I thought that I would start here

black smoke excess fuel to air .blue smoke oil.check air filter as suggested and turbo hoses for splits on pressure side and collapsing on suction side ,lastly injectors

Under what circumstances does it chuck out black smoke, on heavy acceleration or all the time?

The first thing I would do is to take out the air filter and clean the airfilter box then go for a short drive and see if it's still doing it. Put in new air filter.

These engine are hungry for a good air supply, so any blockages will affect them. Air filter is one blockage point but potentially so are the rubber pipes that go from the turbo to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the inlet manifold (look for large diameter 2+"black rubber pipes). You will need to take each one off in turn, to check to see if it is de-laminating inside and creating a flap which partially blocks the pipe.
