BFG MTs Vs BFG ATs

Hi

Im undecided about changing my tyres from ATs to MTs, My disco used to be my daily driver with a little bit of green laning now its my second car/toy and is being used more for green lanes, off road etc and a lot less for the road.

The only time my disco will now become driven daily is when it snows next which makes me wonder: Will these tyres be better suited to the snow and ice than my All terrains?

Also are the road manners much worse and the off road capability much improved with the Mud terrains?

Are my all terrains perfectly adequate for my use (mainly green laning) and mud terrains only for the more hardcore off roader?

And wheres the best online place to get em?

Anyone with experience in both tyres please feel free to add you two pence worth.

Have had both ATs and MTs and on my disco 1 the only difference i have found are
the MTs are a bit nosyier on the road, As for grip never noticed the difference.

Personally I think there is a clue in the name

mud terrain are for mud
all terain for all terrains

but then as a toy ????

how much off roading in mud do you do / will you do?
how much snow are you going into?

if your off roading how do you get there and how far,
off roading do you mean pay and play OR green lanes?
serious off road, lots of mud / water = MT's
green lanes over moors etc = AT's

Have you had a lift got snorkel / diff guards / sliders?
If its standard then all the gear no idea comes into mind

What you been up to with the AT's did you ever get stuck needing MT's?
Is that what you're still thinking about


Sorry more questions than answers and a personal view, not a MT's are better than AT's or t'other way round
all depends on what you are going to do and how you going to use them
MT's and no lift is a bit pointless as the diffs will stop you any way

from what youve said so far i think that i'll stick with the ATs, I dont have any lift, winch, underbody protection snorkle etc and still have the original front bumper and tow bar, I only plan on doing local green lanes at present but maybe as time progresses and money permitting i will build my own go anywhere machine, I havent got stuck so far but one reason i asked about the mud terrains is I havent been round these lanes in bad weather yet and wanted to minimise my chances of getting stuck. Ive been told by a local warden that on the sand dunes around our area and in really soft sand you need the Mud terrains or you get stuck but I dont plan on taking my disco anywhere near the beach it'll kill it! And the only snow it'll see is when it replaces the VW as the school run/weekly shop vehicle (we live up a dodgy drive) and for some lovely picturesque green laning.

To answer your queries about snow and ice, the general consensus is that M/Ts are best for really deep, soft, fresh snow, but A/Ts are better for compacted snow, slush, and ice.

As for on road manners, yes, M/Ts are almost always noticeably noisier than A/Ts, characterised by a humming at low-ish speeds which can build to a roar at high (motorway) cruising speeds. Saying that, BFG M/Ts are supposed to be the most civilised of their type, so it's swings and raaandabaaats in the end.

So when it snows it looks like I have the choice of either less chance of getting stuck when i go green laning but more chance of crashing on the road with MTs or vice versa then, still staying with the ATs so far, wouldnt it be nice to be able to afford both sets and just use the appropriate ones when needed, not much chance of that though, knew I should have paid attention during my education instead of getting smashed and chasing skirt, was fun though........

in my view there's not much point if the setup wont allow at least 31" tyres.

youre not gonna tackle much serious **** with small tyres on anyway, so you probably dont need the upgrade.

that said, the MTs will be better in some situations, like mud, thean the ATs, regardless.

if you see more mud these days, they will probably be better.

IMO mild mud tyres like BFGs are very safe on the road.

I've a slightly different take on this - and its that Im trying to set the car up to cope with the worse that I'm likely to encounter on the basis that it may be noisier or less efficient on the road but if it saves me half a day's digging in the mud then I'd personally go for MTs rather than ATs. I have been stuck with ATs (and excellent ATs - General Grabber AT2's which I rate highly) turning into slicks with the `wrong constituency' mud and it was a messy buisness. Had to get towed out on a green lane (by another Disco)... Go anywhere is the strapline but you'll only manage it on the right set up.

Imo, you shouldn't need M/Ts on a green lane. If you do, then it's likely that you shouldn't really be driving the lane in the first place.

If it's muddy enough to warrant M/Ts then it's probably being damaged.

Langers you are quite right. What I'm starting to gather from reading the other sites on landyzone is that your green lane days may be numbered. The green lanes in your country are a public through fare for all to use,walkers,bikers, horse back and the like. But the green lanes are getting torn up by 4x4's who use bad judgement when using them. Some councils have closed or restricted acess to them.

Years age in our national land system (usa) the off roaders just went where ever they wanted to . They really tore up the land just to see how much stuff they could go through. So now most trails are closed no access any motor vehicles .

So be careful with what you have and don't mess it up

im always very careful not to make any mess or disturb anyone/thing and leave everything how you found it, ive been on a couple of 4X4 courses and obey the rules.

To clarify - I've found that in green lanes in the leicestershire area that you can find your self in mud quite quickly. You 100% right that you shouldnt purposefully drive a lane that you are likely to get stuck in. But can any one tell me that they've never been stuck in one? My point was about setting the car up for worst eventualities not about regular use.

The trains run in Sweden in deep snow and in -30C. In the UK they stop if its damp. The difference is that they are set up for different conditions. The point I was raising was I'd rather set up for the extreme even though I may only experience it once in a year or even 2 than find my self with a `leaves on the line' situation... (which in a Landrover is frankly embarassing ) )

In my area, it's the people who drive 'mad max' Suzuki SJs. These guys not only wreck the lanes themselves, but venture off them into the surrounding farmland or woodland and wreck that too.

It's like, they have enough cash to waste on the ridiculous vehicles they drive, but they can't afford to pay £30 to go and do their thing on a Pay 'n' Play site?
