Under my landy
Morning.

My TD5 Disco 2 has developed a loud thud / knocking when i turn.

It first started happening only when turning right and was after i'd done a bit of heavy towing on the road. I thought it might therefore be suspension related, but having given everything a good pull last night everything seems solid - only thing i found was the exhaust rubber mount was slightly off and the exhaust tip could hit the plastic body - so i put that back correctly, but still get the knocking. The suspension, shocks, arms, etc. all seemed very solid and in place.

It sounds like it is coming from the rear - but noises can be desceptive when driving.

It started doing this Monday or Tuesday - it's now doing it when i turn left too.

It's ok with a gentle turn at any speed, but a harsher turn (roundabouts, etc.) you get the knock / bang (anything above 20ish - won't do it in a car park turning sharply into a parking space) Its definetly louder on the right though.

It sounds like something is moving and hitting something. You get the feeling of something hitting something when the bang sounds (that kind of subtle vibration)

Did a quick search - found a thread about a 300tdi doing it - but the thread kinda fizzled out with no real solution / diagnosis.

Not really done much off roading in it - though i was using low range a bit on Monday when towing a friends series on/off trailer + across some grass

Have a closer look at your rear anti roll bar links. They are the 2 bars that have small ball joints that drop from the ends to the axle. Even a small amount of movement can make a suprising amount on noise. Quite cheap and easy to replace.
Paul.

My classic range rover that i had (may not have anything to do with yours but just a thought) did the same after i towed a caravan to Wales crunching and felt like knocking got home and i took advise and changed the viscous coupling in the box underneath ..Problem cured..

cheers, i'll go and have another look under it at lunch time.

Did the viscous coupling box going bang on corners or just generally knock?

The only viscous coupling on a '99 TD5, as far as I know, is for the radiator fan, so that won't be affected by corners.

Check for things like, top and bottom swivel balljoints, wear in front wheelhubs (You'll need to get the front wheels off the ground for both of these), front and rear anti-rollbar bushes etc etc etc.

Hmm - also sounds like is could be the Watts Linkage (doesn't the D2 have a Watts Link instead of an anti-roll bar on the rear?). Mine was like that, but most noticed on bumpy slow speed manouveres (and very loud off-road crawling in 1st or low ratio). If it's the central pivot that's worn it's hard to get access without proper gear (or lots of bricks and ramps!).

Have a search for Watts Linkage, but also nip under the car and try to wobble the linkage and look for play.

If it's the Watts, then these may help:

RGX100970 its inside the rod where the rod meets the chassis (PolyBush Kit "1AE" is the replacement)
RGX100960 fits on the joint where links meet the pivot
RGW100020 fits the watts linkage to the rear axle joint "the middle pivot bearing".

Rimmer Bros seem to stock POLYBUSH alongside OEM...

Ok, went under last night, tried everything, couldn't get a thing to move at all, looked at Watts linkage to see if there was any play. None. Nothing looks like its been hitting anything else either :confused:

Thought about dropping it in at a inde. but haven't yet (lack of money an all that)

Bringing up an old post but this is best description I've seen that matches the problems I'm having at the minute (thanks @Bump) did you manage to rectify the problem? Thanks Matthew

Clunking from rear of Disco 2 ?? My first look would be Watts Linkage. Get someone to rock it side to side when you are under looking at linkage. If its that, it will be quite apparent.

It's hard to tell if it's from the rear as sometimes it happens when I turn right like it's to do with the front end, yet I can't hear it on the road it's quiet and smooth.

However last weekend as I was driving round a scout camp and it's a little bumpy but it was really loud and knocking :/

Will try what you said that's great thanks :)

Plenty to make noise

Watts
Drop links
Actuator bush
Damper
Radius arm bush (unlikely)
