auto box on 2003 disco 2 slow to go in gear

just bought a disco 2 auto bad mistake me thinks had it about 2 weeks and the auto box has started to play up wont go into gear unless u rev it up then goes in with a bang and shoots forward does the same in reverse any one any ideas

drain some oil out check colour and for burnt smell ,if blackish box needs looking at if okay change oil and try may take some miles

1. Never, ever rev up the engine before putting the autobox in gear, you WILL damage it.

2. Check the oil level in the autobox. There is a particular procedure for doing this.

3. As James said take some oil out of the autobox and examine for colour - should be bright red - and smell. If the oil is in poor condition drain and replace. Use the specific oil-level check procedure on refill.
