When I run about on a full tank or top half the engine runs fine. When the fuel gets down to last quarter tank it starts to judder when I come to a halt and sometimes cuts out. The tank should have at least another hundred miles in it . Its a 94 300 auto. Any ideas ?

Is the fuel filler cap done up properly might not have the pressure there

I'd also check the fuel filter might be getting blocked and the sediment bowl. might be moister in the system. hard to say really

remove plate under boot carpet remove ,remove plate ,check pipes for leaks and corrosion, some times they just let some air in as it is sucked harder the lower the fuel level, if okay remove sender unit and ckeck pipe

could be a faulty combined electric pump / sender unit situated inside the tank i have to do this on mine as my fuel light comes on more or less when its about to run out of fuel

Thanks for the tips. I did try using svo last year mixed with derv but it didn't run very well so went back to derv.

for what its worth I'd tend to agree with barmatt - I've known this with other cars and it was crap in the fuel tank creating a `butterfly' effect on fuel flow. Fill the tank and it redisturbs the crap but as the tank empties the crap gets sucked back towards the fuel lines. I had to remove the tank, clean it and the integral filter out to sort the problem. I've never let a tank get much less than 1/4 full since!

The other possibility apart from the above is that your fuel breather pipe is blocked, causing a vacuum as the fuel gets sucked out - see

Hope this helps

i had this problem before on one of my old disco's,it turned out to be the fuel pick up pipe under the sender unit had a tiny hole in it about half way down,so below half a tank it was drawing a small amount of air in hence the rough running,as james martin says remove the sender unit and check the pipes, sometimes the hole may only be the size of a pin prick though

On TDi Disco's there is no electric pump in the tank - it's just the fuel sensor. The fuel pump is actually a lift pump and is situated on the drivers side of the engine.

There is a possibility that the sender unit is faulty or it's float is bent, giving incorrect readings to the gauge. If this were to be the case your symptoms are due to running out of fuel.
