hi
i hope you can help me i have recently bought a 1999 discovery 2 td5 . i have a problem where even at low speed the traction control is kicking in very hard for no apparent reason slowing the car and in some cases bring the car to near a dead stop before allowing the car to continue . i have bought a nanocom and have no faults on the abs sls menu any help advice were to start checks to make

thank you gaz

If you lose traction it's doing it's job correctly. If it's doing this while accelerating on the road ie tarmach then summat is wrong. I'm sure one of the pros will be along shortly to shed some light. Are you getting the TC light & noise by any chance?

If this is happening on dry roads, the chances are its the SLABS ecu at fault, the early ones did fail in this way.The worst one I had would bring the TC on at 50mph on a dry road, yet make the ABS active at parking speeds too making it difficult to bring the car to a stop.
The latest SLABS ecu, from memory is SRD5000070 works well and is less fussy about the poor signal from the wheel speed sensors too.
If everything else checks out ok this may be the answer.

hi
thank you for your reply s so far i would like to update that we have noticed the traction control is only kicking in aggressively stopping the car when i turning left no problem turning to the right hope this helps
thank you gaz

Unplug the ABS sensors arow starting with the left front one and make test rides between them.....after u unplugged one let it unplugged cos if it will do the trick with all the sensors unplugged then u'll know it's the ECU...if the symptoms will vanish after a sensor then replace that with a new one..... be aware u'll have the ABS light(probably 3 amigos) on and they might remain there untill u erase the codes.

hello
update i removed the front left sensor and drove the car this did seem to fix the problem with the traction control . when i returned i noticed the rear right brake was very hot . i have lifted the car onto axle stands and ran the car the rear right wheel is not turning the front right wheel is just turning the left side of the car is fine . i have noticed when i very lightly press the brake the rear right wheels is then free turning . any help advice welcome

thanks gaz

Did u do that with the engine runnin?...coz if u did that means the TC kicked in considering that the wheel is spinning(put brake on it) then touching the brake u've disabled it

hello
maybe a bit of confusion on the replays i disconnected the left front abs sensor as advised
which resulted in the right rear brake locking on with smoke and heat . so i put the disco on axle stands . rear pads needed changing i changed them the right hand side was unevenly worn from top to bottom and the bottom guide pin rusty and stiff so i cleaned and regressed now free moving . reconnected the front left abs sensor test drove still fault so i disconnected again tested again noticed rear right still burning so disconnected rear right abs sensor parked to cool . test drove 1 hour later seams to be fine . give me a clue . nanocom says no faults and all abs sensors at 2.21 im totally fu****

Take out the abs pump relay(R10) from engine bay and try it so....if the rear brake will release then it's the ECU which gives false command to the rear brake...anyway it's strange that u've disconneted the sensors and no warning/3 amigos or fault code logged...that's e real eeriness which makes me suspect the ECU.

hello
sorry forgot to say when removed the abs sensor did get the abs warning lights Christmas tree dash board so on . the brakes are free now the front left and rear right asb sensors are disconnected

thanks again gaz

hello
OK i have reconnected all the abs sensors removed the r10 relay which did result in the car driving fine no brake problems . i did have the abs hdc tc and hand brake warning lights on dose this mean the abs ecu if so which one is best to fit as i have seen there are a couple of model numbers .is there anything else i can do to make sure it is the abs ecu and thank you for your advice im getting there slowly

Then the only logical explanation for me is that the ECU gave some false command to the TC or brake on the rear wheel.....to make sure....swap the two rear sesnors and refit the relay .... if the previous problem will come back then i cant think to something else that a faulty ECU.....u have to choose the part number of ECU according to the VIN.....use microcat or make sure that the ECU u take is the proper one.

Have you checked the wheel bearings for "play".....also when fitting the sensors, make sure they are FULLY seated into the hub, sometimes the "O" ring stops it being fully seated and then when you tighten the bolt down it just bends the bracket instead of fully seating the sensor.

It's interesting the fact that his car(regardless of the 3 amigos) is not doing the agressive braking with the sensors disconnected and the trick with the rear brake blocked just when the ABS is unabled. Dont u think if a sensor is not fully inserted into the hub is quite similar with the situation when it's totally disconnected? .... eldritch issue here isnt it:confused:

hello
i have swapped the rear sensors from left to right . installed the relay reset the faults . as soon as i drove away got abs fault 3 amigos had no traction control problems or sticking brakes . when returned checked the faults with nanocom which said the rear right abs sensor output was to low . i have ordered the part will let you know

hello
ok update the abs sensor has done the trick . i have know idea why the nanocom never registered the sensor fault . would like to thank you all for help and advise provided . also i have noticed the headlight adjustment motors are constantly on when turning the head lights on any thoughts
thank
