Advice Needed Death Wobble/Vibrate!!

bought another 300tdi disco to run around in and basically it has like a wheel balancing wobble/vibrate but more central a bit more severe and faster (if that makes sense) if you drive it normal through the gears it wont do it till around 55/60mph in 5th but if you ask for power it will do it around 2500/3000rpm upwards in 3rd 4th & 5th.

Basically if you ask for power it will do it, the powers all there but so's the wobble and it doesnt accelerate out of it, obv i've checked all the wheels etc, engine is all fine, just after some advice, where to start eliminating, its definitely drivetrain but no idea where to start could it be prop balancing? gearbox bearings? any advice would be massively appreciated, cheers

i would start with the swivel pins/bearings
had this on my 90 re-built the swivel housings and job sorted

Having just sorted the exact same problem on the 90. I'd advise do the easy jobs first.
Steering damper.
Radius/trailing arm bushes.
Wheel bearings
swivels and swivel pins check preload with a spring loaded scale as use by anglers etc.
Shocks

Do it in that order. and you'll eventually arrive at the solution.

i've got a simular thing on my disco, but more of a judder, disappers around 55 to 60 but it feels like a vibration through the dash, steering wheel seems fine, checked wheel bearings and they're tight with no play

Judder - thats a better word, thats what its like, more central and quite violent the harder you work it, its just had a lift fitted so all thats ok, new bearings and swivel balls too

ahh, just had a lift fitted. now we get more info.
do you have caster corrected bushes or radius arms fitted?

no just a +2 spring a shock, all that is fine though im pretty clued up on that stuff, got a fully kitted out one, pretty certain its drivetrain issues not too clever in that area

Prop UJ's probably then the strain put on em by the lift is prob been transmitted to the drive.

yh was gonna start with the prop UJ's tbh never had one go on me solely because of a 2 inch lift before, suppose its luck of the draw, i'll give it a go an let you know, cheers

Sounds transmission-related to me, I'd start with examining/replacing the rubber doughnut on the rear propshaft, then grease all propshaft grease nipples and check to see if grease comes through ok on the u/j cages.

front prop is prone to seizure, as it seems that for some reason, they miss a grease nipple on one U/J. It doesn't hit on or off road, so why use a screw instead i will never know!

Anyway, check that the U/J's are cold next time you go for a drive, they shopuld be if moving ok. If warm, then you have wear. Grab hold of the prop and knuckle and check for movement between the two - there should be no movement at all. If you have some, then the U/J is shot.

If the UJ is causing vibration, then this usually means the needle bearings have broken up and it is about to snap - this is usually felt when putting on power or around 30 mph. Keep and eye on the front prop u/j's as you will lose your transfer box if it snaps! lol! Be a right mess!

Just done all this myself, front and rear - now the front is done the vibration that is always had is gone!
