Aaaaaaaaarrrgh!

Just popped to the shops and as I was pulling onto the drive in the dark I noticed a large puddle of oil on the tarmac. Got out and checked and it seems that there must be a small hole in the bottom of the rear diff at the back where the filler plug is. I'll have a decent look at it tomorrow but it looks like its just corroded through. Does any one know if any one makes a repair cover for them or is it just a case of trying to weld up with the corrosion.

Am supposed to be going laning Sunday so need a quick repair.

Just answered my own question. Another £40.00 I need to spend and probably £35.00 for welding....Grr.

Tell me about it, I don't mind doing the jobs on it but it always goes when I'm skint. I'll see if i can get a dab of weld on it tomorrow and then just top it up, I have some stuff on ebay for sale so when it sells I'll buy a new pan for it. thinking about it i doubt if it will weld with oil dripping from it, maybe chemical metal or something? All ideas greatly appreciated as I need to keep it on the road.

Go with the chemical metal, it's good stuff.

We used chemical metal on a range rover classic diff casing that was leaking. it was my dads car, he had it for 3 years like that. Then i bought the car from him and had it for another 4 years, and it still was holding when i sold it.
I would definately give it a try, just make shure the surface of the diff is clean and roughed up before putting it on.

Cheers guys, I'll give a try tomorrow, I've used it in the past and to be honest it only needs to hold for a couple of weeks.

Take a piece of normal oldstyle soap and rub it over the leaking spot. That will stop the oil temporarly then cleanit, rough it and put on your liquid metal

Sorted the leak out. I used a wire brush in a drill to remove most of the corrosion on the bottom of the Diff pan, there was actually some good metal underneath and the hole was about the size of a pin hole. I didn't have any old fashioned soap so I used a candle, figuring the wax would do the same job, and it worked great. I cleaned the whole area up and gave it a good covering of Chemical metal, left it for an hour or so and topped up the Diff. Hopefully it will hold for a week or so until I get a new pan.
