300tdi Judders

Hi,

I'm new to this so be kind. I have a 95 reg disco and on my way back from the Arctic Circle the landy started to judder. Its independent of the gearbox as its not reletive to which gear i'm in, it has nothing to do with the engine as its does not occure at a certain rmp and it dissapears when a depress the clutch or take it out of gear. The only time it occurs is around 30 mph. From this I guessed that it was a UJ. Is that right? Also it seems to stop in the colder whether (about -2).

Any help would be great.

check your props sounds very much like one of them needs replacing

also check the front output flange of the transfer box for play - easy to do when you are testing your uj's for play - the front bearing is prone to failing / wearing especially if the tranny is low on oil

Seems to me unlikely to be prop, or transfer box as dipping clutch or free-wheeling would have no effect? They`ll still turn with the wheels. Maybe the input side of the gearbox? Maybe the clutch itself?
I know it`s difficult, but what sort of juddering? Is it like an engine about to stall, or more like a wheel wobble or vibration from an off-centred shaft, or...?

true but it may only be highlighted when the prop/uj's are under load ?

uj's would be my first point of investigation.

Agreed, props & u.j.s worth checking, quick and easy to check. (but a wee bit cold if you`ve not a pit inside a garage).

mine has the same problem at the same speed.could not feel any play on the prop or uj's.intend to take prop off and have a good look.have checked the rear donut and it seems to have a split in it so will replace this first.

as a bit more info from our part (was in a rush when i replied last nite)

checking prop on motor-
park and chock wheels
handbrake off an out of gear
swing on prop and look at uj, up / down movement and side to side.
any movement other than the whole prop rotating by an inch or two requires replacement of uj.

if all seems good, greasing may help in the short term but will loosen all the muck an crap and your vibration will return, with the movement visible when checking.

if you feel the urge to remove the prop, check the uj's by hand to the full travel of the yoke, they should flop from side to side in all 4 directions with ease. if theres any tight spots, this will cause a vibration and is a sign of lack of lube and will need replacing.

just replaced the rear doughnut as it was split and after a quick test drive the vibration seems to have gone.
still intent to overhaul the ujs as i have bought the parts.
should have really done this in the summer months but the ktm was much more fun.

Had a quick tug at the propshaft and it seems to move a fair bit up and down, so i guess that the UJ is definatly the problem. I will order a new one, put it in and let you know.
