300Tdi Discovery Autobox filter location

Hello everyone,

In the middle of changing the transmission fluids in my Discovery. Its a 1996 300Tdi auto. Drained the ATF out of the sump of the gearbox, but are unable to locate the filter. Its probably right in front of me, but i can't seem to see it. I really would appreciate if someone could help me with this one :)
 
Thanks, that probably explains why i didn't see it. Should removing the filter release more ATF out of the gearbox? I didn't measure how much came out, but its not even close to 9.5 liters which is how much the box should hold.

does 9.5 lts inc the pipes running from the gearbox to the oil cooler and the oil in the oil cooler aswell.

there will still be oil left in the sump although you have drained it and there will be oil in the filter aswell i would think.
 
I got the 9.5 liter figure from my local Land Rover parts seller. I don't actually know if it includes the pipes and the cooler. Tried to pull off the sump, everything going fine and then i come across one of the sump screws hidden behind the gearbox mount. Impossible to get a socket on it, couldn't even get a spanner on it. Think i'm going to have to re-tighten the sump and just fill it up again :(
 
i haven't looked at mine yet but from what i have herd from other peeps they are pretty easy to remove, whats the reason you are removing the sump or is it just to replace the filter and refill with oil.

Draining the autobox via the sump plug will only release approx 4.5ltrs of oil - the balance is predominantly held in the torque converter, with smaller amounts in the pipes and oil cooler.
 
Just to replace the filter. I did over 35K in it and this is its first gearbox oil change. Think it deserves a new filter :) The only way I see of doing it is jacking up the gearbox at the mount and pulling the mount right off to gain access to the screw. And i think that there is plenty more oil left somewhere, because as I said very little came out. Nothing was wrong with it, just thought it was time for it to get done

right i haven't herd anything like that before its a shame you couldn't have got it up on ramps as it would give you more room, when i do mine i plan to get it on 4 ramps so will have plenty of room.

i am just in the process of dropping the auto box sump as the gasket was leaking, I have undone the mount and tapped it towards the back of the disco so i could get to the hidden screw, I am now having trouble getting the sump off as tyhe x member is in the way, anyone got any tips?

You are thinking of a D2 Cyberprog, the 300TDi has a dip stick in the engine bay

Remove the cross member?
 
I had the same problem with the 6th bolt.

I used a trolley jack to take the weight then took out the 4 17 or 19mm bolts from the bracket. This then allowed the bracket to be moved over enough to get to the last bolt.

The biggest problem I had was getting the sump back on with the new gasket. Pain in the arse. :(

I had thought of that but was hoping the experts on here had a trick or two to save me doing that. i will try jacking the box up a bit and see if that helps.

I would also like to know if anyone knows where i could get a new gasket from on a sunday in wiltshire

ok sorted, jacked up the gearbox and it came out. still need a gasket though

It's only on V8s that you have to remove the crossmember (but then if it makes it easier for U) but you do have to remove a gearbox mounting and surport the gearbox, also on a V8 the front part of the exhaust has to be removed, so a lot easier on a diesel.. but still wouldn't fancy lying on my back on the driveway do this job :)

Clean the sump and before fitting the new gasket over the edge of the sump use spray gasket adhesive, otherwise it won't stay in place on the lip of the sump then lay the sump on a flat surface to ensure the gasket is on square...
