I got a Disco 300 TDi ,'coz it was all I could afford, to tow my little (1.5Te) ship.

I was a bit doubtfull as I seemed to be using the box more than I had to with the 406 estate and that was without the boat on, the Disco seemed a bit under powered. The 406 was the 110HDi turbo deisel and a grand motor.

Anyway it was about 8 when we set off to get on the A1/M1 link road at Leeds and it was getting dark before we had got far. I relaxed a bit after checking the wheels a couple of times and deciding the wheel bearings may just get us there. The tug was doing well even though I was having to drop a cog to do the hills. When I had to give it some welly I noticed a fog develop coming out of the exhaust, only when someone was behind shining their lights on it. I checked the oil to find it wasn't using any. Someone has told me it'll be unburnt diesel, whatever, it's not worrying me now.

The big unknown was how we would do over the "Rest and be Thankfull", the name says it all. This section of the A83 between Arrochar and Cairndow is a bit of a climb follwed by a decent. I had visions of us crawling up at 20mph reving the knackers off it but non of that, we romped up @ 40mph in 3rd gear (@2750rpm) with a big silly grin, I was well impressed. I soon stood on the brakes for the run down the other side though.

I'm dead pleased with the new tug, I may just head South next year, that hill out of Mylor doesn't seem half as scary now.

That's a nice little ship - what is it? A Swift 18?

If you replace your air filter regularly it will help with towing.

The boat is a Copland Harrier 20'er. I was OK towing my First 18 with the 406, all the trauma came from the trailer wheel bearings.

When I took the Harrier to Largs last year the 406 coped but I suspect it was above it's 1500Kg tow weight, pulling up sharp could have been a problem but thankfully I didn't have to.

Thanks for the tip on the air filter, I realised I will need to give the Disco a bit more TLC than the Pug. :D

I have a 300tdi disco and a 6m zodiac rib with a big Johnston 90hp v4 on the back and it tows brilliantly, well thats compared to my old series 3 :)
