hi guys just had a problem with my gearbox i pulled over to the side of the road and put the car in neutral when i went to set off again it would only go in 5th and was very stiff.
As i was been towed home it freed itself off almost straight away does anyone have any ideas ? it is a 1994 300 tdi and have had no previous funny noises or anything also does anyone know where i can get techinical drawings of the box thanks everyone

well my mechanic is stumped he thinks it maybe wear in the rail and it is now running ok any ideas?

it could be the bias plate has gone. don't panick its an easy cheep fix if it is. when they snap some times the bit that breaks of gets stuck against the leaver and you been towed could just have shook it loose. just take ya gaiter off and remove centre consoule then ya'll find it underneath all the insulation and a small alli cover.

Just make sure that nothing has dropped down past the gear lever gaiter. I had a similar experience with my Rover 800 turbo diesel as after stopping for a break the car wouldn't go into gear! This could be very expensive I thought as gearboxes are somewhere north of £1000 but after removing the gear lever gaiter all was revealed. A little M3 stainless steel screw that I'd bought for a boat job had gone through a little hole in the gaiter. It had lodged on top of the gear lever ball and was jamming the lever stopping it going into gear. The screw was all mangled up unfortunately but it was a lot cheaper than a new gearbox!

I had a similar problem on my 98 series 1 disco manual ,I stopped at traffic lights and suddenly could not select 2nd 4th & reverse . It was a simple to solve problem ! I took the gaiter of the gear shift and found that a piece of casting that is above and behind the gear lever had broken off and was jamming the lever . just picked it up with fingers and problem fixed . I don't know why this bit of casting was even there , seemed to serve no purpose . Anyway that was six months ago & no more trouble . hope this is your problem , cos its easy fixed . Cheers Chris

was it a square shaped piece of steel with one broken edge ,cos if it was it is part of the bias plate that hoolds gear lever in socket and that peice stands up between the two springs to hold them in correct position to keep gear stick inline with 3rd 4th gears

No , James the piece of metal that I refer to is, or was on top of the gear shift housing running east west behind the gear stick , a flimsy bit of die casting about 15mm or 3/4" high 2 mm or 1/8" thick and approx 35mm or 1, 1/2 " long. It did not seem to serve any purpose except to maybe limit the throw of the gear stick towards the rear of the vehicle . Anyway no ill effect without it there . Cheers Chris

i have a simular problem my gear stick has gone floppy and is hard to select 3rd and 5th gear any advice would be a big help
