come on then which one of these engines are better?

I know there will be some people out there with some serious experience with both engines which do you prefer? what are the pros and cons of both engines? mpg, durability ease of fixing and transplanting range of available parts all that kind of thing.

Im new to landys and there seems to be a lot more questions on how to fix 300's and not as many on fixing 200's

are the 200 so old that they have all been scraped?:p

200 is very very basic and bomb proof but like a tractor,
300 a bit more refined
both are a doddle to work on and both are really easy to get bits for

Hi lynden

a lot of 200s have been scrapped or used as off road trucks as they are so cheep to buy and new and used parts are still plentyfull as they where rot boxes and some very early 300s are going the same way but think there where more 300s made and made better, for me the 300 looks better inside and out but for practicallity the 200 was slightly better, better mpg and slightly more powerfull due to the 300 having a cat - converter and egr valve but thats easly converted to de - cat and de - e g r ed to get the power back to 200 performance, the 300 had different injectors to make the engine more quieter but other than the engine mounts being in a different place on the 300 both engines are more or less the same, i have had two 300s 1 man and 1 auto and neither of them have let me down and i love the auto i have now.

this is another 1 of them 'personal view' threads. got a 200tdi in me 110 w/ full size allisport intercooler and it has never let me down, pulls like a tank and is very good on juice.

everyone has thier own experiances with this

Like i said im totally new to landrovers so all info is handy. I have a 93 200 disco and to say its like a tractor is an understatment but in my experience themore basic the less there is to go wrong the better! but there is clearly room for a litttle refinement.

The reason i asked is you see a lot of defenders with the 200 in and like i said you see alot more questions on how to fix 300's so i put 2&2 together and didn't know weather i had made 5 :) and i was wondering if when the time comes that my body rots from round me which will be sooner rather than later :( to keep the 200 and stick it in a 300 shape or rangie or to sell it and buy a 300

Thanks for the reply!

Do you find there is much difrence in the mpg on the auto and are there any dissadvantages over the manual?

The only auto i ever had was a 2L 16v omega and it drank fuel like it was going out of fashion!

Anyone who thinks a 200tdi disco is like a tractor really needs to get some time in driving a diesel series landy. You will then realise that your disco is more like a ****in rolls royce than a tractor.

not really maybe 1 mile to the gallon less but i have recently removed the cooling fan and although the mpg around town is the same i have gained about 5 mpg on long runs and the engine is slightly more responsive.

my mates 200 is alot quieter an more resposive than my 300???????? oh god whats about to brake on mine now. 200's seem to pull harder, where as the 300 seems to look better inside and out, plus 300's have a double slide out cup holder lol.

sorry forgot to say i have a static caravan in cornwall and live in manchester and at the end of october i towed a small trailer loaded with a s11a complete gearbox that i sold to a guy in devon and with 6 peeps and luggage in the car and then onto the caravan and the fact that with an auto you don't loose power / speed changing gear as you would with a manual and i hardly had to use kick down i would say the auto is best, mine has a de-catt pipe and egr valve blanked off but a 300 with a cat and egr valve still fitted may have struggled the de-catt pipe and egr valve where already done when i bought it but i did the de-catt pipe and egr valve on my manual very easy job if you need to do one.

I'd be more interested in how much rust the thing was dying from than which engine it had to be honest. Unless it was an mpi, they are truly awful.

ok im going to throw it in there, where do we stand with the v8 lpg's?????

If the mpg was the same I would swopin a heartbeat but i have no idea on how to look after an lpg systemand cant affoed garage bills so they are a no go till i get a better job :)

When it dies for the rust i didn't want to get rid of the 200tdi if its better than the 300's thats all.

I totall agree if i could aford to run a v8 i would :)
