Hi

Was driving home from the shop today and the engine light came on and the engine started to lose power. The jeep came to a halt but the engine stayed running.

With the engine running I pressed the accelerator with no response and no increase in revs.

If i put the car into first gear and lifted the clutch the car would start rolling but pressing the accelerator didnt affect it and it did not speed up.

Any ideas what this could be ??

Just a gentle observation but if you refer to your Land Rover Discovery as a jeep (as in Jeep, the American competitor) - on a Land Rover forum - you might get some rather unhelpful and sarcastic comments.

I had that problem on my TD5. It was the throttle potentiometer. You'll have a 'Driver Demand' error if it's the throttle. The RAC were able to read this fault with their generic code reader.

Fitted a new throttle, which was pretty easy, and all sorted.

This problem can also be caused by loss of the 5v supply to the throttle pedal - often when the engine loom rubs through around the front of the cyl head.
I usually scope the pedal outputs, its usually quite obvious where the fault lies as one track will give a very scatty trace as you move the pedal up and down.(If its the pedal assy at fault)
Careful inspection of he loom helps to see if the supply is being corrupted - the ecu uses the same 5v output for other sensors such as the maf.

Ahh i got ya. Just in my country everybody refers to them as Jeeps because... they are not cars.

Anyhow moving on.

Thanks for all the replies, weird thing is after limping home in first gear at idle speed and parking it up for the night.

When i came out the next day and started her up, no engine light and it revved away as normal and drove as normal.

So now i dont know what was wrong with it... and am just waiting for it to happen again.

That's no surprise to be honest, but it usually means it WILL come back.

If you get a chance to have the codes read you may be able to track down what is the problem and rectify it before it leaves you stranded.
