Like a bit of a tit, I've managed to smash my 2 button fob for my 96 TDi into lots of pieces by driving over it!

I've got a spare fob, but it doesn't work, so I'm going to change the battery and hope that it's assigned to the car.

If it isn't, is there a sequence of button pressings I need to do to sync it up?

The car has been off the road for about 6 months with no battery in it, whilst I did some work on it.

Well, this key fob came with the car, but it never worked. It's my own fault for never getting it sorted as a spare.

I'm hoping just the battery change will do it. What's the difference between a program and a sync if you don't mind me asking?

I did a search, but just info on 1 button fobs came back from what I found.

Sync dunt cost ya owt... i paid £25 all in for a spare fob a new key and reprogram which i thort wuz a good deal

Programming, is telling the fob (instructions) on what it has to do and how and when to do it (communication protocol) when one of the buttons is pressed.

Synchronizing, is just to ensure the fobs communication is in time (insequence) with the systems ECU after the vehicle or fobs battery has been disconnected.
