Hello all!!! Well, there's now a section for 101's, so I thought I'd start the ball rolling with mine... Having owned one in the UK, and loved it, I find the need to own another!!! So, having found the 'go to guy' who has 101's in Melbourne, I went to view the three he had. The choice was a 24v ex RAF Hard top, a 200 Tdi powered GS, and a std V8 GS. I settled on the V8 GS as it was the best of a rough bunch. The V8 was not the original, and was also knackered! The deal was done, and a few weeks later it was sat in my yard, along with a second spare wheel, a NATO hitch, spare front springs and a new tilt! Here it is in Melbourne the day I spent some cash...

After deciding against attempting to drive it home (trusted my instincts and boy am I glad I did), as the fuel tank was leaking, along with the swivel seals, the engine had a head gasket blown, as well as being fairly knackered etc etc etc, I settled on vehicle transport. Several weeks later and it arrived. I'd forgotten how 'agricultural' 101's are, but it didn't put me off...

Ok, work begins... So, to get the vehicle registered here in South Australia, firstly it has to have an I.D check, where it gets checked against its import papers etc and then it's on to the pits.... To get the vehicle ready for the pits, there was quite a list!! Engine change (borrowed a 3.9 from a fellow Aussie forum member.. Cheers again Offender90), swivel seals change, all fluids change, rad repair, exhaust repairs, rectify light and wiper issues, mirrors, and legal tyres!!! Here's the rims undergoing paint....

Leyland Daf 45 truck, along with its gearbox.. Sourced on EBay out of the UK, as it was a lot cheaper than a similar donk here... There'll b more on the engine in a bit... :p

I liked the engine in the Lf45 I drove for work, plenty of torque and it'd do 80mph [135Kph ish] :D before they restricted it to 56mph … :(
It was about 3.7tons empty and still had plenty of go in it at 8 tons...

:D

Work was now well under way and the day of the pits was looming ever closer. The fuel tank was too far gone, so I was going to have to source a new one.... or build another... Having built twin tanks on my old red 101, I went down the same path again.. This story will continue when I get home tonight!! :)

Well, with one turn of the fuel screw, it'll happily pull the 101 up to 140kph and stay there... Not that we've tried this of course!!! :D

Ah.... 101 addiction! Yeah, they're like that a bit.. Its a Land Rover than can take the abuse without breaking, and really turns heads!!!

So, back to 'Mick' as mine is now known.. (I was born in Ireland, an Aussie forum friend called Mick was a great help with getting me to and from the airport, and the 101 served in Northern Ireland, so 'Mick' seemed fitting!!). Tanks. Yup, the original was rotten... and after a failed attempt at fixing it, I decided it was time to make another pair of linked tanks like the ones on my UK 101. They were to also incorporate an air tank on the RHS and room for twin batteries on the left.. (24v starting on the future planned Cummins). Here's the RH tank when it was in the fab stages....

With the tanks painted and in place, the wheels painted and fitted with new stupidly expensive rubber, and 4 modified steps, the vehicle is starting to take shape!! Now for a visit to the pits!!!

Ok, I've tried to post a vid of the Cummins running on the floor of the workshop, but for some reason it won't load (security token or something like that is needed.... Will work on that!), but we did have success at the pits! It caused amusement but it passed!! So with that, we had to get a plate to match!!!! ;)

More to follow a little later.. Have somewhere else I have to be now! :)

I've got to get me one of these. Whats the plan for it?

Eventually, a repaint, and prob a hardtop a bit like the one I built for my UK truck. The cab will be reworked with a decent dash, the bumper will be remade incorporating 4 headlights.... Then there'll be an over engineered camper trailer based on the width and height dimensions of the 101. Hardtop in the build stages on my old one. Sorry the pic is not clear as it was taken from a photo!

Ok, back to 'Mick'.. With rego, and a heavy right foot, oh and now with 3.54:1 Salisbury diffs, the 3.9 was never going to be in there for long.... but, 200km on $200 of fuel.. Nah, it's Cummins time!!!! So, out with the V8 and box and time for some extensive modifications!!
