Ive been considering extending the back of the 101, and putting in a side door.

Ive seen photos on the facehook group, but im never going to be able to find them again -

Have any of you done, or been involved with doing this extension?

Thanks, Julian

For example -

Right... ive been on photoshop!

Ive always been a fan of the URAL 4320 -

So then i got to thinking -

This diagram is with the rear extended by aprox 12 inches, and the top extended by similar (not exact measurements, i just did the diagram by eye)

Then i got out photoshop...

This is our actual truck -

And this is a photoshop hack of it -

(first with just the rear extended)

And then with the top extended also -

Points -

I know it wont be an original 101. It wasnt when i purchased it, and, since then, its moved further and further from that point, and im fine with that.

It will raise the center of gravity. I think ive probably lowered it against a stock 101 ambulance, with the diesel engine, and (to be fitted) aprox 3.5x capacity fuel tanks. There wont be anything of significant weight on the rack - empty jerry cans, empty grey water tank, etc.

It will cause more drag. But the vehical is a brick on wheels anyhow, so these things are all relevant.

What it will do, however, is make it much nicer to be in for extended periods. Im thinking that's worth it, but id be interested in comments before i start anyhow?

That's Jon's old body (the chap who did the work in the first photo)
Ive not seen whatever he has replaced it with, but i saw his for-sale post for the body (as in just the body, not the truck)

Ive considered the pop-up top - indeed, that was my first plan, but im getting more into the idea of a fixed roof now. I think it would be easier to engineer, with less to then go wrong later.

Im just not convinced by the appearance etc. yet!

i know what you mean. it would solve the cog and height issue though

think the extended height front would look better with the rack thingy enclosed, or the rack at the back and the front bit could be internal storage or maybe a bunk over the cab

I did try having it enclosed, but did not like the look. It kind of looked a bit 1970s for my liking (which is ironic, as the 101 is 1970s!)

Have a look, and see what you think -

with that roof size, you could put a handrail up on the roof, bit of decking and have a nice bbq area :D
