Hello all,
I've had some VIN number woes in the past with the first Landy I purchased because i'm looking to restore one of these great autos and take it back home to the states. Of course, on my second go at buying a defender, I would have learned my lesson and purchased on that had matching vin numbers. I would check the chassis and see if it corresponded with the year make, engine type and body type.
I'm afraid I might have screwed up again. Shaking my head.........
Is it possible.... That land rover might have put a chassis from a '83/'84 onto an '86?? My VIN on the chassis is the same as the plate on the brake housing except for one letter:
chassis reads- SALLDVAD7AA......
Plate reads-----SALLDVAC7AA......

So really, according to my VIN on the plate, it should be a 2.5 diesel from '83 or '84. But i'm registered as an '86 2.5 petrol. You might be asking if the serial numbers are the same.... Yes they are. This is all very strange. Is there any other way I can tell the true year of this vehicle?

Thank you in advance for ANY information.

Cheers

It just seems outlandish... I'm scratching me head over this one. Do you think it just wasn't registered until 3 or 2 years later after production? It was the year they had the least sales....

without seeing the truck it could be an 86 petrol as plate shows thats had chassis swapped and number stamped incorrectly or worse, theres not enough to go from,86 was a change point for some parts what door handles has it lift up or button

Lift door handles... Sh*t, i'm getting nervous...

If that's a C reg, and its down as a petrol , it would have been a 2.3 yes? As far as Im aware they never had a hole in the wing nor should it have side repeaters above the front wheel arches.
But it could have had new wings.
Is that a genuine EX MOD vehicle?

I think it's just a Modded regular Defender to look like a Ex MOD. oh well...I'm almost ready to give up honestly. This is my second go around i.e. second defender I screwed up on the VINs. Everyone puts in those 200/300tdi's that I can't export. I hope I can soon find a 110 minimal rust with the correct VINs.

Why don't you check with Land Rover Heritage at Gaydon ? For a reasonable fee they will be able to tell you what the spec of the vehicle was when it was built, and serial numbers of all the major units. If the Vin number stamped on the chassis looks as if it's not been tampered with and it matches the Vin on the V5, then I would say the number has been stamped wrong on the Vin plate by Land Rover. Especially as only one digit is different. All being well..... with the details supplied by Heritage matching what's on the V5, you can remove the Vin plate and buy a blank from Ebay and get your correct Vin stamped onto it. You can even buy the plate with your Vin stamped on for..... a bit pricey around £50 but stamped properly and saves you making a mess of the blank and saves you buying the number and letter stamps. Let me know how you get on.
