So, I just took the front prop shaft off to replace a failed UJ, got the old one out, started putting the new one in, only to find that the prop shaft seems to be bigger than the UJs I have bought.

I guess this makes it a TD5 one, rather than a 300tdi?

What is the part number for that? And a decent place to get one?

The ones I got were GKN Hardy spicer ones from Paddocks and were £7.50 each, but the equivalent TD5 one is £30?!

The UJ I took out was def about 10mm bigger than the one I bought. Will measure them properly in the morning. The new ones didn't even nearly fit...

Oh, and I talked to my stepdad about it, and he confirmed they put a heavier duty front prop shaft in, but didn't know anymore than that.

usually 2 types from LR Old and new new are narrow and wide can't remember off my head but something like 87mm and 95mm but those figues are gusetimates

Series ones and early Coilsprung RRC are the wider type and thus wider angle well genuine ones anyway. If you fit a britpart propshaft they all use the later narrow type and are not as wide an angle so what you get away with lift etc is very much dependant on what propshaft is fitted.

Ah couldnt remember the widths however I have a propshaft in the garage with 92mm across in the shed feck knows where i got that from think its a bedford lorry one cut down so sumthin'

Ok, so the standard one is 75mm and the one I have is 92mm(ish). Any ideas where this propshaft came from?!

Fairynuff not looked on paddocks, would have thought a gkn would be twice the price tho. For my 300 a cheapie is 8 a gkn a tenner (ish)

Just to add my tuppenceworth. I noticed this the other day when fitting a new UJ to my britpart rear prop (1987 90) I noticed that its probably about 1mm or so too large. The span that is. If I push a cup through on one side then the other side is just a few mm shy of letting me put a circlip in there. It's the correct part numbers and correct prop but due to this I've had to push it through against pressure from the circlip on the other side just to secure both sides. Think its GKN UJs I fitted too so no britpart crap

Hmm, for the 300tdi ones, standard GKN ones were £4.50 and hardy splicer ones were£7.50. Why are the TD5 ones £30?!

If anyone was interested, I ordered a standard GKN one from eBay for £12. If I am going on an expedition anywhere, I will probably swap them all for hardy spicer ones.

So last question, I have 4 spare hardy spicer UJs now, shall I change the back ones just because I can and don't know when they were last done? Have the prop shaft off as I want to clean it up and grease it all.
