its a 1999 td5 defender, ive taken the tranny box off and the oil leak seems to be from the casing behind where the front prop mounts to the box. there's a ring of bolts that attach this casing to the main transfer box casing and that's where its leaking from, it appears to have a silicone type of gasket between the two, i want to know if i can undo the ring of bolts and either fit a gasket or re-silicone it, without disturbing whatever lives inside the casing

yes if you remove hi low housing first and click it in diff lock, make sure you dont let diff come out ,but are you sure its not coming out of intermediate shaft hole ,they often wear, can be undone 30mm nut tapped back enough to remove oring and replace and put good quality silicone aroud shaft on box side so its pulled over oring as you fit shaft back in tighten nut tight lock nut with chisel in shaft notch,if is front output housing clean with thinners or petrol re silicone but be careful around top rigth angle corner as this can easy be siliconed where outer casing dosent sit, dont whatever you do fit earlier gasket as this housing holds front brg and shims for diff and you would alter diff preload by 12 thou

Just changed the o ring on the front of my intermediate shaft without removing the transferbox from the vehical,I replaced the two top studs mounting it to the gearbox with m 8 coach bolts and after disconecting everything slid thr trasferbox back just enough to get at the o ring while supporting the back of the box with a strap over the seat back.

gonna change oil seals on shaft whilst i'm doing it, you dont know the part number of the seal do you as they gave me FTC4939 and its way to big, the one i need is approx 61mm outside diameter, cheers

taken casings apart, siliconed and put back together, just need to find the seal to fit the shaft, then put it all back on the car
