So though id put some pics up of the build so far. well not quite a build but a strip down first.
new chassis comes tomorrow so more photos of the build to come.

Looks like an interesting job. Well done on getting the engine and gearbox out all in one big piece.

How rusty is that chassis? It looks to me like it has a lot of its original factory paint on it.

all in all the chassis was in good nick i put a new x member on the back but with further measurements with the tape measure i found that chassis was twisted. at one stage or another it looked like it had a back end shunt. so bought myself a new galv one from marslands.

and with the engine found it came out quite easily. borrowed the crane and levelling arm from a mate which made life a hell of a lot easier.

new chassis arrived today. and must say im well chuffed, all the welds are neat and tidy. and looks a nice job. just hope everything fits ok when bits start to be put back on.

main problem with a big workshop... it gets filled up with ****.
and the floor is crap makes life serious hard work trying to
move anything heavy on small castors..

I decided to strip the bulkhead right out and sandblast it. ive got a new shape Td5 dash to go onto it, anybody have any experience of doing these. looks to be a pretty straight forward swap at the moment

Right finally managed to get round and do a bit on the defender. half rebuilt the rear axles with new bearings, discs and calipers. just waiting for pinion bearings to come and get the diff back in.

Really thought id have a rolling chassis this weekend. everything turned up coils, shocks, extended shock brackets, radius arms etc. but sods law trailing arms have some how managed to disappear in transit. so to be fare to the chap at adrenalin 4x4 he sent me another set out which will hopefully be here Tuesday.
so il just have to sit and twiddle my thumbs till then

Great to see a Td5 rebuild for a change (as opposed to 200/300Tdi) and everyone likes to see a nice new galvanised chassis being built up.

Have you thought about getting a galvanised bulkhead and cappings too? They always rust even if well painted and I always thought if I was putting in all the effort to do a rebuild I would do the whole lot.

Are you planning on priming and painting the chassis before putting it all together? I prefer a black chassis - just a personal preference - and as it is more subtle looking than a galvanised-finished one I often think it might help decrease danger of theft etc.

In any case, it's early days but looks great so far.

PS Which Td5 engine have you got: the earlier or the later one?

Im going to give the chassis a coat of clear waxoyl its suppose to be as just as good as the black stuff.

The only problem i facing with galvanising the bulkhead is trying to find a company which will do it. There all miles away.

The engine is unfortunately a 10p but it runs sweet as a nut so not touching that. The only thing i will change is the transfer box. A mate gave me it so it would be rude its a 1.2 ratio aswell.

didnt manage to get much done this week. kept waiting n various parts that dissapear in the post.

but still finally got the front axle on. and rear will go on tomorrow.
