Hi guys

My passenger door skin on my 90 is badly oxidized in a couple of places at just under the window and along the bottom, the frame is in A1 nick though but i was looking at a few doors at the recent billing show doors priced at £250 each some with good skins but rotten frames so got thinking if i was to buy a cheap door with a good skin with a rotten frame off say ebay is it possible to remove the skin off the door and fit it to my door.

I know i could buy a new door skin but that then would need spraying to match the 90 where as i have seen a few doors in the same colour as mine bronze green for about £100 on ebay but not sure if this is worth doing or not :)

whats wrong with painting the new skin ?

ime the skins rot before the frame. chances are youll find your new door with its mint looking skin is full of filler and/or that the great nick paint over the oxidisation has actually just been ready to fall off for a while and as soon as you unpeal the edge it cracks and falls off anyway.

I wouldn't for the reasons cited above...
Removing a used skin and refitting it whilst is possible is surely going to completely destroy the paint in those areas. And unless the birmabright is in excellent condition & you anneal it as you go along (further screwing the paint) then the likelihood of the rolled edges cracking off is high. And if there is any glue between the panel and skin..... Just not worth it for the sake of avoiding some paintwork.

Ok these are the best 2 close up pic's i have of the door skin but it looks like we will have to try and repair it and see what happens

Hi guys

For £250 you can buy brand new doors and do what I did

I know i could buy a new door skin

I think it would be pointless doing this mate. If you put a new skin on to the rotten frame, the new skin will rot through very quickly and you will be back to square one.

That's the problem the door frame on the 90 is very good its the door skin that's rotten.

think when we get to doing the chassis swap i mite give the door to someone who's good with body work to sort out depending on cost if not i will have a look at it my self and see how i get on :)

In my experience, stuff that looks not too bad turns out to be critical when you take it apart. That said, there are some great rust inhibitors available these days. You could treat the frame on the outside, Dinitrol the inside, buy new skin and paint it, put another barrier inbetween and fix together.
Actually, if the frames are in really good nick, you could get them shot blasted and plastic coated.

Yeah true will see what i find when we get round to removing it :)
