Default Priming fuel system

ello again,

yet more problems from the G. i dont know why i even bother with the haynes manual cos i always end up on here anyway!

so, i changed my fuel filter today, without any probs. i used the hand lever below the fuel lift pump to aid bleeding. i did things in this order.

union bolt ontop of filter
bleed valve on fuel injector
union bolt on all 4 injectors.

i turned the ignition on to activate the stop solinoid and pumped some more.

i then turned the engine over a few times and i couldnt get it to start

as some of you may be aware, ive been having starter problems anyway (which i have yet to solve) so it was taking ages and ages, and i think ive drained my batt

question is, can i use jump leads from my girlfriends car to try and start mine, or have i missed something on the bleeding/priming? do these things take in a lot of air when you remove the filter?

its a 1984 2.5n/a 90.

cheers,

G

Depends on the power of the battery and the car, if it's just a quick crank of the engine you should be OK but if you're having to turn the engine over for ages I wouldn't, you might end up knackering the battery.

Make sure pump is off the cam and lifting fuel. Undo bleed nut on filter, pump until all air is expelled from filter close bleed nut, open bleed nut on injector pump.use lift pump until all air is expelled from injector pump, close bleed nut. Now use your starter.

Did you see a stream of airless diesel spill from the injector pump?

yer, i pumped for ages until the air from the filter expelled. then i undid the injector pump valve, that pisses air and then fuel. then i undid all the union bolts on the injectors and pumped till fuel came out (airless) so as far as i can tell ive bled the system.

ive just come back home (to Wales) to work for the week and my old man reckons that after some time the air may have worked back around the system and that bleeding it again may solve it.

so the plan is... tomorrow i go back to Bristol and rebleed the system and using my G/F pug 306 (1.9 diesel) turn the engine over until it fires.

think it will work? like i said, my landy never started straight away in the 1st place so air in the system has just sapped all the energy. it usually takes 10-15sec before it starts anyway. so its no wonder my batt. has pretty much given up.

cheers for your replies, hope i can get it running before the weekend

G

You will need to charge your battery properly, the alternator won't do a good enough job if that battery is that discharged. It might start OK after its been on, but it will probaly not start it the next morning without charging it.

Your Pug 306 is well up to starting your Land Rover. Connect the jump leads and leave the Pug running for 10 mins so it pumps some charge into your LR battery. This always assumes the LR battery is not so drained that it's now broken with buckled plates.

Fast idle the Pug and crank the LR with your foot flat on the accelerator pedal. Don't crank for more than 30 secs. If it hasn't started by then, it wont.

If no start, begin to slacken injector pipes in turn until fuel comes out of them. Chances are you will only have to do one of them before it will fire.

Keep an eye on the starter motor it uses a lot of amps and you might cook it, if you keep cranking for a long time. It will get very hot.

thanks for your advice guys,

i connected the jumps and my landy started in approx 3sec! i think my batt, may well be F$5^3d its on charge now, will leave it overnight and try to start it with my batt in the morn. if that dont work i reckon i need a new batt. its only a 65ah, the T5 we use at work are running 110ah. so im guessing the batt ive got is too small for the cranking of a landy.
