Middle Seat Legality

Hi all. Does anyone know the legalaties of the middle seat in a defender? There is not enough room for an adult but what about children? I'm looking it out but the wife wants to keep it :mad:

Have 2 be seen to keep her happy after all the money that is being spent;)
 
they are legal, but the rules for children sitting in them are a minefield, i believe there ok for occasional use just the same as a kid can sit in the back of your car without a booster if its occasional.
check it all out regarding kids and booster and seat belts on the GOV website

Personally i wouldn't have put mine in the middle seat. Had him in the passenger seat a few times in his booster with the Mrs in the middle but #### its a tight squeeze
 
Little,n in a child seat seat on the passenger seat, wife in the middle and me trying to drive. Its like sitting in a captains seat using her leg as an armrest ;). Changing gear is awkward. I tried to get her to change for me but that didnt work, couldn,t find any gear:D. Its not too bad round here so only have them in it when going to tip, woods etc. The only thing im not happy about is the lack of a head restraint behind the middle seat.
 
Just put an exmoor trim 3 point harness on my middle seat. It's not the easiest thing to fit, but it works ok and it means that me or the wife can have both sprogs in the car at the same time for local journeys etc

you know people like you are so fooking stupid it defies belief??? Do you really think that the law makes an exception for "occasional" failures to obey the law? & if so would they mind if I " occasionally" murdered you?? :rolleyes:

The law is very clear on children been carried in side facing seats. You may not use any type of restraint on a child in a side facing seat. Also children get priority over any seats that have a belt fitted (with exception of drivers seat) So the missus must give up the front seat if you have a child and no other APPROVED child restraint..

Put a 3 point harness in mine anorl. Don't use it often but don't like the thought of anyone head-butting me dash (S2a) with a lapbelt on :eek:

Children aged 3 and above, until they reach EITHER their 12th birthday OR 135cm in height

In the Front Seat

The child MUST use the correct child restraint.
In the Rear Seat

The child MUST use the correct restraint, where seat belts are fitted.

There are three exceptions where there is not a child seat available. In each case the child MUST use the adult belt instead. They are -

1) in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle;

2) if the child is travelling on a short distance for reason of unexpected necessity;

3) if there are two occupied child restraints in the rear which prevent the fitment of a third.

In addition, a child 3 and over may travel unrestrained in the rear seat of a vehicle if seat belts are not available.

It is the driver's legal responsibility to ensure that the child is correctly restrained.
