My 2001 TD5 defender feels weak and literally dies in third gear if there is even a tint bit of slope.

It emits alot of black smoke and the fuel consumption is alot more than normal and all dis started only a few days back.

Whats can be wrong? It has about 105000kms on the clock very well maintain. The nearest T4 diagnostic system in about 250 kms away so I cant be bothered to make the trip.

Would it be the MAF sensor? I have never replaced it on mine since new. Can it be installed without the T4 system? Will the fault code clear out by itself once the sensor is replaced?

Cheers!

possibly the MAF, disconnect it and see if it runs better, if it does then job done. if not then id be looking for split turbo hoses, clogged fuel filter etc etc...

@ Defender 110... I will disconnect it and see if it works..
I replaced the fuel filter 6k kms and there are no apparent faults like I said the car is well looked after.

@johnlad..

I have disconnected the EGR by plugging the vacuum hose that actuates it. I did clean MAF couple of days ago but it didnt make any difference.

Will have I do clear codes using T4 once sensor is replaced or will it take care of itself?

Cheers!

the maf and map sensors are 2 different things the map is connected to the inlet manifold with 2 small bolts it needs to be carefully prised out and cleaned with electrical contact cleaner, although unplugged the egr could still be gunked up or stuck open its best to remove it completly, take the 4 bolts out of it and at least look inside to see if it is gunked up

Okay.. sorry I confused the MAP sensor with MAF. i do clean the MAP sensor every now and then but I have used carb cleaner to clean MAF and MAF. Whats an electrical contact cleaner? Its not available here can I use some thing else instead of that? Like WD-40?

I will check out the egr!

@Johnlad...

Cleaned the MAP with carb cleaner... Removed and cleaned EGR with kerosene... it wasn't too dirty and wasn't stuck open. I pushed it open with a screw driver and it was smooth but I left the vacuum hose disconnected as before.

Also cleaned the MAF sensor with carb cleaner and then drove the car with the socket plugged and unplugged... hardly made any difference, I mean I tried my best to compare the performance with and without the socket plugged but I couldn't tell the difference.

Does the water separator sensor under the fuel filter actually works? Cuz the light in the instrument cluster has never actually lit up ever since I bought this car and we have really ****ty diesel here!

As far as I know the MAF has a filament a bit like a lightbulb that gets hot. The amount of electrical current needed to maintain it at a constant temperature is dependant on the volume and temperature of the air flowing over it and the ECU monitors the current.
How you test them I have no idea.

I see your location is shown as Islamabad? Six weeks ago I was in Quetta for two weeks and Karachi for a week working for a mining company. Small world.

Lol... small world!!

Quetta not really a very safe place.. If you come to Islamabad do send me a pm, we should meet up!

I have bought a new MAF because tomorrow I am leaving for a 1600 kms 5 days trip to northern Pakistan... so bought it just in case!

Need your advice on a MAF issue.

Changed my MAF sensor yesterday.. but still have same low power and black smoke issue. Don't think it's the MAF this time, can't be 2 in a month. Seems to be fine in the morning and on colder days but if the ambient temperature is high (higher than normal !) power seems to be down then comes and goes.

Tonight checked

air filter - clean

Fuel pipes - no obvious kinks or damage

No loose pipes or cables

Turbo waste gate - appears to move smoothly

No obvious leaks

Only other thing I can think of is the injector wiring loom. Have noticed the occasional misfire on tick over and slight hesitation / coughing at low speed pick up.

What are the symptoms of oil in wiring loom and should I have it at just 40000 miles ?

Check your injector harness at both ends. Just unplug it from the head and then from the ECU, you'll notice the oil if its there.

Even if there is no oil, its something you should keep an eye on.

Pull the vac pipe off the EGR and plug it up. Then take for a drive and be very surprised. Same issue resolved on 110w's TD5 a couple of weeks ago.

Works the other way round. When the water (which is heavier than the fuel) sits across the contacts the light should come on.

Works the other way mate. Short the terminals and the light should come on. Its the water that completes the circuit. If you look inside the water sensor its just two contacts separated by about 1/4 inch.

didnt you say this a couple of years and posts ago. :D
