Discomania bought my 90 a year or more back which had a nearly new fully re-con Sherpa 15J diesel engine in it. It was a 2.5 petrol when I bought it. Sometimes the mpg reached double figures if I drove really gently!

Yesterday on his way to see me, on the motorway at 60+ mph the timing belt snapped and he stopped. I towed him in.

Rocker cover off, rocker shaft off, and pushrods out.
5 severely bent pushrods. Looking bad ....

Crankshaft pulley off, tin cover off, and there's the damned belt snapped clean as a whistle. Looking worse ....

We ordered 8 pushrods and a belt at about 4 o'clock.

Discomania can tell y'all what happened today, but if you didn't believe in miracles before, you might soon!

He emailed me from home! He must have made it all the way!

25 miles away!

That means my "one hour or 25 miles, whichever comes sooner" warranty has expired so I'm in the clear!

Thursday morning, going along the motorway at about 65mph engine goes out like a light, oil light on, so dipped clutch and coasted into the hard shoulder.

Tried to restart it and listen to what things sounded like and decided it was fuel related... Check fuel line, which has a clear section in it and saw there was no fuel in the line, so try to prime it with the lift pump which was either broken or on the wrong side of the Cam, turned engine over a bit and tried again, no luck... Was heading out to CharlesY's so called him and told him I had broken down and would I be able to get a tow.

So he came and towed me in, however before we went, I turned the engine over on the starter while he watched the valves, no valves moving!

Got it back and took the timing chest tin cover off (no need to remove water pump) broken timing belt, clean break.

Rocker cover off to find pushrods not looking too good.

Whiped the rocker arm off and pulled the pushrods out, of which 5 looked like this:

On the phone to Paddocks and had 8 pushrods ordered, and a new timing belt for a Sherpa/LDV/DAF 2.5 for £7.99. Both arrived next day.

Didn't see any other damage, nothing seized so we gave it a go and put it back together...

Started up first time no problem like nothing had ever happened!

Amazing! £37.99 for all the parts!

Thanks CharlesY for all your help! I wait in fear for your invoice!

Hmmm...... how much have you got ?

PS - has anyone else snapped a belt at speed and done NO damage bar a few bent pushrods?

I haven't but a mate did with his 200tdi same thing set of pushrods and new belt, driving again same day.

I told Discomania not to try that trick a second time.
Disappointing a new LandRover part belt should last barely 30k miles.
No matter; less than £40 for bits, and about £400 + vat should cover my time.
