I haven't posted any questions on here for I while, as a search normally answers but can anybody help as i'm stuck. I need to find the gearbox number on a 300 tdi, as the clutch master cylinder is leaking ( found that out on here) but there is two types of master cylinder. Before this number and after. Haynes manual says there is a metal plate on gearbox been under it for an hour now, and no metal plate! There is a number cast along the bottom though.
PS presume gearbox is at the front and transfer 'box behind if not that would explain the problem.

It should be just below the filler plug..................er, I think.
