when i turn the ignition key and all the lighty things come on, the fuel gauge works, but when i go to start the engine, the fuel gauge goes to zero untill the engine has started- ti dont happen to anything else, is it an earthing problem? if so can someone tell me where the earth points are, so i can clean them up i have def td5 2002,

It's on a R designated circuit, via an ignition load relay which means it only gets power at I and II or possibly only II, only circuits designated 15 get power on II and III.

Things like heaters, lights and radios tend to get put onto R circuits to either reduce load, or protect electronic equipment that may not like the voltage drop/surge.
