okay this is probably the stupidest thread you will ever read.
i've got a new wiper motor for my defender and i've tried putting it on and it's decided it's going to work oppositely as when i turn it on the wipers rest point up instead of laying flat. i've been fettling with it for about an hour and it's really started to frustrate me.

my question is... is there an adjuster somewhere or something that i've done wrong. i even set the cog in the motor to the exact same point that my old motor was resting and turned it on and still it's not having any of it??

input and pictures would be very helpful thanks :)

it's not as simple as that because the motor is actually working the wrong way, so if i move the wipers flat for starting position it would just hit the gutter under the windscreen :(

Ok, start from scratch and describe what has happened.

New motor, not new drive cable or wheel boxes.

new motor = same as old one, why diagnose a new motor? - what was wrong with the old one?

This "rest pointing up" - what wipe speed does this happen on??

On single flick or all speeds?

What does happen on single flick?

Check out and search for "park switch" - this may be your issue

Right ok. The problem is that when I put the new motor in the wipers are now working in reverse I.e. the resting point of my wipers is point up instead of laying flat. And from pointing up they go down and then rest pointing up again. Whereas normally they should rest flat parallel with the windscreen and work up and rest flat again.

Are you with me now?

Have you checked that you have got the correct wiper motor and not one for a left hand drive - I just replaced mine and came across that when searching for a cheap motor!
You could also compare your new motor with your old motor that the part No & visible wire colour sequences match!

it's the exact same motor as my old one and i took it from a rolled 2010 police defender that was at the scrap yard so it's not left hand drive either. how can i invert it?

another update, the spindle is turning clockwise and i tried my old one and thats turning clockwise aswel so i am extreamly confused as to why it's working in reverse?????? there's an adjuster on the motor, thats flat head and locked by a 10m nut, what does that adjust?
and on both motors it's been marked? is it all supposed to be lined up in a particular way?

if its exactly the same and the motion is the same then it should work the same which indicates your doing something different.
When i put my cable into the motor the gear was positioned in the park position as per this image from busters tutorial

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f41/wiper-boxes-cable-renewal-99743.html

this means the cable attachment is as far into the sleeve in the motor housing as it can go which is indicated by the position of the gear.
Other than that I'm at a loss but im sure that others here with greater knowledge will be of more help!

yep your on the money there. i thought both motors were the same but i tested them both and what i didn't notice before was that at park position they were at opposite sides of the cog which i've boiled down to a left hand drive motor :( so for some reason there was a Sussex police left hand drive 110 station wagon cruising around? don't know why the police had a left hand drive motor? very strange.
so i've put my old nakered one back in :( what a waste of time.
thanks for all your help people, we got there in the end :)

i thought about that, but would that actually work. the park position would still be in the same place but it would turn the spindle the other way.
