Help!

Was doing 60mph down the A1 when there was a big noise and some crunching, coupled to an extreme smell (could have been the clutch but also smelt of oil)

Got to the hard shoulder and stalled.

The engine starts ok with clutch in, but it seems like the box is stuck in 5 th!

Got RAC bus home now I'm scratching my head.

No evidence of damage under the vehicle and I have managed to drive it into the garage.

Can't select a gear with the lever, but definitely stuck in a gear, any ideas, common problem?

I have started to remove the box, not sure where to get a replacement, again any ideas?

Steve

Mine gets stuck in third at times now and again. Was told it was the synchro hub. Try driving forward in 5th, rev it quite high whilst letting the clutch up and trying to change it out. Hopefully once the revs match up enough it might come out

Stuck in gear is probably the after effect of a gearbox failure. If it made crunching / grinding noises then something has probably gone catastrophically wrong and getting it back in neutral won't really help things as the damage has been done. Have you tried dropping the oil, I would suspect it is low if you had a 'hot' smell and probably full of swarf / bits if teeth etc.

Hi Jamesmartin,

Yes the box is stuck in 5th and the gear stick will move all over the place.

I guess the box is knackered, I have started to get it out this afternoon.

Any idea where I might get a replacement, it's a 200tdi

Steve

Sorry, I'm a bit of a numpty!

Turret and yolk? New language to me, where do I find them on the box?

directly under gear stick, there are many reasons for what youve described but thats a common easy one to check , other like synchro hub or pivot failure would require box stripping to fix

I hAd loose yolk problem last week, although symptoms were not quite the same as yours. Take out the rubber boot that covers both gearsticks, undo 4 bolts that hold gearstick turret and lift off. Yolk has an allen grub screw holding it to shaft, make sure its screwed tight into the hole in the shaft, use threadlock to secure
