Defender alarm??

Hey guys,

2 weeks ago my 90 200tdi defender pride and joy got broke into for a stupid iPod smashed the drivers window, no other damage just the inconvienience of buying a new one and fitting it.

However since then I have stepped up the security by putting some gates on the back yard and a lock, with a security light directly next to the defender, also I wired in a home made immobiliser switch linked to the fuel pump.

But with the increasing number of defenders being stolen I am looking to get or fit an alarm and just wondering what people on here have in their defenders ? Or any companies in the south west to recommend ?


Any help appreciated

tbh mechanical devices such as a steering wheel lock or pedal lock are a better bet than an alarm.

Currently residing in Bridgwater, the reason for alarm is my room looks onto the back yard looking directly on to where the defender is, and the defender holds a lot of my tools which are insured but if anyone was to attempt to get in if I had an alarm I could act quickly.

I've been looking at toad alarms anyone had any experience with them?

hi i believe those toad alarms are very good, worth the pennies and dont fault very often. you can get the toad ai606 fitted by stafford specialist auto electronics for £224.00 which is silly cheap. and if your handy you can retro fit central locking for about 15.00 more

No harm in sticking an alarm on, but its not really worth putting a £200+ alarm on.
as it can be defeated as easy as a £30 ebay special.
It may go off for a couple seconds before its disarmed which may be enough for you to hear it and act.

But once they are in it takes mins to drive away.

I agree with Ratty

Id spend the £200+ on mechanical stuff instead of an alarm.
And and a £30 alarm as well just to make a bit of noise if you so wish

Number 1 as said is disklok.number 2 is bolt some of those disc padlocks you see on some work vans and expedition landys to both front doors and back.number 3 tracker.number 4 alarm cheapo..number 5.big dog.

Ive been contemplating an alarm now for some time. Ive got steering lock and pedal lock already but an alarm would be cool as it would alert me to the local scum if indeed they did try to steal it. Im not spending £200 plus on a fancy alarm. Does anyone have a link to an ebay special with experience fitting one of these? Are they any good? The last thing i want is to **** the neighbours off with false alarms in the middle of the night.

By all means get a cheap alarm to scare the kids off but it wont stop anyone with half a brain whos been to Borstal for a few months to learn the tricks of the trade. If your alarm suddenly starts sounding for no apparent reason night after night then beware because often the scrotes will keep deliberately setting it off without actually trying to get in. You naturally assume an alarm fault and dont set it one night so the neighbours can get some kip. Guess what? When the scotes try to set it off and it don't sound they are in and away. Happens even with fancy high end alarms.

Physical deterrents slow them down and time is their worst enemy.

Recently fitted a Cobra immobiliser to mine. Cost about £40. Quite involved to fit but it's helped my peace of mind (and hopefully insurance). Still use a steering lock bar thing too though.

No doubt someone who really knows what they're doing could bypass it but if they're that desparate then they could probably get through most other alarm/immobilisers.

My logic is that if there is visible security fitted (including the little flashing LED and key-thing for my immobiliser) then most scrotes (sadly not all) will move on

steering bar locks are pointless they can be defeated in 4 secs by a 10 yr old!

If you wana keep you landy get a disklok.

I think that having an alarm is as essential as having mechanical locks etc.. whats to tell you that the little scrote isnt on your drive with a hacksaw and a chisel. And for the sake of devices such as clutch claws and diclocks theyre not cheap. And the devices you talk of for probing alarms arent useable anymore on all CAT 1 thatcham aproved alarm systems that are new, any attempt to probe them or cut wires will just cause the battery back up siren to sound or set off the siren. 200.00 isnt alot when you compare that cb radios etc.. can be in the excess of that. And the standard fitment LR alarm leaves a hell of a lot to be desired of.

If £200 isnt alot, then the £90 for disklok is a bargain considering its saving your £6+k Landy.

Unforuntatly due to the simplisity of Landy electrics it doesnt matter how sophisticated the alarm or immobilsier are, you can bypass them with say a portable battery pack....

But at the end of the day its your landy.
Personally i have, an alarm, immobiliser, disklok, wheels on full lock EVERYTIME i leave it.
And when its for a long period of time or over night, its blocked in my another car, cctv, and security light. I think im goin to invest in a pedal lock if the thefts of landys keep moving closer to me.!!

Landy's can be driven with disclocks on. Disclocks can easily be hacked by the right scrote.

Landy's can be lifted. Handbrakes snipped and pushed away for further work to be carried out. Wheels nicked, door locks attacked with screwdrivers.

What's going to alert you should any of the above be attempted???

Id like to see you drive away with a disklok on....
It covers the entire steering wheel.

Nothing short of chaining it to the ground will stop a HiAb lifting it away.

Try it!! Move it 50 feet, the distance you would need to drive onto a trailer.

I've also seen em removed like a tin can

Mine couldnt possibly be moved off of my drive way with the Disklok on.
As the wheels are on full lock pushing it or pulling it would just push it into the wall at very slow speed.

Im not saying they cant be removed if you check out the link i posted it takes 117 Seconds to remove disklok, i am simply saying it is the slowest to remove...

The longer it takes them:
A. the less likly they are to attack it.
B. the more time youve got to react.

I'm not dissing it mate, every car needs one, I'm just saying don't become complacent, if it's worth nabbing they will overcome anything it's just about slowing em enough to catch em.

All of the above should be used in combination, I have a full pedal lock in addition to many others mentioned and more, I still wake up in the middle of the night and look out expecting its gone.

The scrote can then break in and get your keys!! It's determination like this that won us Brits wars, just a shame they can't send the scum onto the front line!!

Yup i completely agree, the game here is not " STOP THEM NICKING IT".
Its "SLOW THEM DOWN". and make it look as dificult as possible so they move on!
