Ok, I've ask this before I know but I'm not getting anywhere with my investigations...

At low speeds (up to 35mph) no noise at all. At faster speeds (35/40mph+) no noise on acceleration, no noise on braking, but when you coast with the throttle slightly depressed to maintain speed you have this clanking/grinding noise.

Foot on clutch, same noise until you start braking.

Someone suggested UJs - I got underneath and gave them a tug with the handbrake off and no movement other than a slight rotation with the prop.

I got a greasegun and went crazy on the nipples - they were a bit dry and I was hoping for a change in the noise, but on immediate test drive the exact same noise was there.

It sounds like its coming from the middle of the landy, but then noise travels, and short of hanging out of the open door on the dual carriageway I'm short on ideas apart from putting into the local garage for inspection and diagnosis.

Anyone, please, any suggestions??

I can take a digital recorder out with me, record the noise and post it here if anyone thinks it may help with the diagnosis?

have you checked all yer oil levels?
you could try taking the front prop and try driving with the diff lock on to try and narrow yer search down abit.

oh and if yer uj's wur dry it will take some time fer the grease to work it way around every thing then yerd want to re grease em to ensure they is full

When my ujs were dodgy i changed the whole propshaft coz i was having the same noise under same symptoms on mine - the front UJs only had a tiny bit of play and there was also a tiny bit of play between the two halves of the propshaft (in the worn splines), but when i changed them it was like driving a new car, all noises, grinds, rattles, undue clunks completely gone! With the prop off the wear between the splines was a bit more evident but it really doesn't take much play in either to manifest itself as a dodgy noise!

Ok, so it seems the general opinion is still the UJs as originally thought.

Will try regreasing the existing ones, and then change them if still no change.

Diff?
Only reason ah say this, is becaause ah've just changed the rear axle and now got a 'wump...wump...wump' noise on acceleration, but when ah take the foot of the throttle it's gone!!! Wheel bearin's are fine and so's the props and uj's. Bin told it might be summit tae do with a collapsable washer thingy that sets the preload in the doodah!

I had a similar problem with my 90, clunking coming from middle of the landy, but I was only getting it at low speeds and in reverse, and it just turned out to be the handbrake. One of the linings had come away from the shoe and when you would start driving it would catch on the drum, might be worth your while giving that a wee look.

Dude ive got the exact same thing but on my LDV flatbed van.

No noise on acceleration or deceleration. But when you press the throttle enough to maintain speed it make a right nasty noise.

I havnt got a clue what it is, but one of the guys here used to be a mechanic. Ill ask him about it and let you know if I find out.

Ok, finally picked up some new UJs from my local Bearmach - changed the rear's and the noise is gone completely - really smooth ride now too so I'm well chuffed!!

Also, had my local Land Rover specialist have a quick look over and he feels I've picked up a good deal with the price I paid, and the rust problems are easily sorted with a bit of welding and patching, so I'm full speed ahead with my little project now! ;-)))
