Has anyone put 235/85R16 tyres on standard LR 5.5J steel rims? Normally 6J is recommended, but the difference in width is very small so is will fit - just a question whether the tyres will stay on the rims in turns

They will be fine, 235 is as wide as you can go on those rims, any wider is unsafe.

Here goes a little thread ressurection!

Are there any more opinions on this issue?
I'm currently running 235/85r16 BF ATs on 16x7 modular rims. I happen to be a big fan of original parts and the black, wide rims with plastic fake studs annoy me quite a bit. I can get a set of traditional white 5.5j tubeless LR rims almost for free, but I'd like to keep the curremt tyres

My opinion, they're probably OK .. but ...

They probably won't look right, a tad like balloons, and I wouldn't do too much off-roading with them as they'll possibly roll over the rims .. In North Yorks a friend had at least two, possibly more, large tyres roll off his rims on a Disco, though different sizes. I think they were something like 33" x 12.5's on 8" rims, so not that far off in relative terms to what you want to do. However, we were off-roading in fairly extreme circumstances!

I had 235/85/16 on 5.5 wheels and found them terrible they kept going flat and. They aren't recommended for that size wheel. Your better off getting wolf/HD wheels which are 6.5 wide they are much better.

So the general opinion is that I'm better with the current modulars?

I love the Wolfs, but they don't come along cheap here in Portugal.
