Hi guys, I know its Probably been done to death but can anybody suggest an electric winch suitable for a series land rover? I've got between £400/500 to spend. Any help appreciated.
Cheers
Kev

Hi, I'm on a 60 amp alternator, will probably go with a second battery. What are peoples thoughts on the budget superwinch/good winch or am I better off taking a punt with a second hand husky ew8. I've got about £400/500 budget.
Cheers
Kev

I had a tds12,000lb fitted perfect in front of rad. On an 88 it was overkill ! Dual batteries not required just get a hand throttle and set at 2krpm when using it

Thanks for the replies, I am considering a superwinch tiger shark 9500, the reason I don't want a capstan is you need the vehicle running that's why I am looking at a second battery. Just in case I drown the thing.
Cheers

if your serious about getting stuck don't bother with a capstan or a elect winch as theses both cost dosh, add to your insurance bill and running costs.
Your better off with a hand cable winch like (Tirfor).
Pros
can pull any direction.
Does not require battery or running engine.
can be fitted to all landys
doesn't have to come with you every trip to Tesco's
cons
Slower (But your not going anywhere soon anyway.)
Effort required (The exercise will do you good anyway).

Ps
I.ve been off roading for over 10 years now and never been stuck yet, learn to drive off road and go with a mate to pull you out.

WHAT YOU ON ABOUT GETTING STUCK IS ALL PART OF MUDDY FUN!!!!!!!! I've been competing since I was 13 =11 years and trophy's, the stig could have a land rover some people can drive some cant but proper fan's learn before commitment, tell me why do you have a winch if (you can drive)? I think they improve looks and productivity!!! tit!!

Eeup Clivees :) how ya doing?

Sweets, shut the fook up..........are you the son of Bob?

I disagree,
Having a hand winch = well prepared. I'm not saying don't have a winch strapped to the front of your bus.. Just that Hand Winches are awesome when you can't get a vehicle near enough legally, your battery's die etc.
there's a time and place for all tools, no pun intended :D

+2 ... (me and the better half) ...

Tirfor winch will get you out of many a spot ...

Have a capstan winch on the front of mine and got stuck , after following a defender with wider track , put strop around tree and winch pulled me out of the ditch I had slipped in with limited damage.
Before any one say ooot about experience i was doing off roading in the 70's with a tirfor a land anchor and shovel . Actually managed the highest point on pennines X fell" which is now as good as out of bounds.

Warn 8274 .....End of .

nice bus there, AND THAT IS A WINCH!! also if your battery or battery's die then take a wiring course or learn how to take kare of the charging system, during the war you never saw GI'S oh dick go Chuck go get the bloody hand winch!! that's why GMC'S are the ultimate war truck because they came mostly with a winch, and they carries an extra 1 and a half Kilometre's more Wire or depending on how many trucks = more!! so if they're the ultimate tool then why doe's a proper land rover and challenge truck's have NOT A **** TOOL BUT A PROPER WINCH???? now you shut it until you ken what your talking about!!

:multiply:    :D

they say you cant educate pork well I think I've just proved you can :your_wrong::focus::banana::5brant::5bcheers2:

I'll remind you once more about watching your language outside AG. I don't expect to have to again!

Electric and hydraulic winches are great but there's times a hand winch is the best option and rarely not capable of recovering a vehicle.

Only a fool would dismiss them as not worthy of consideration

I've got a capstan winch sitting in garage working with brackets and looking to sell as changed engine to a 200tdi if you want to go for the classic look, has massive amounts of pull on it.
