presumably you've seen kits like this:

Land Rover Series 2 2a 3 Power Steering conversion

a bit pricey though. I've never done a power steering conversion, but I remember reading an article about a conversion which used a Range-Rover or Defender power steering box. If you're handy with the welder it might be worth doing. The most fundamental alteration was to cut out the front X member and move it forwards a few inches then drill some mounting holes in the chassis and weld tubes into them to stop the chassis crushing when the mounting bolts are tightened. Probably the most cost effective thing to do would be to get a newer Land-Rover.

Never heard of doing it like that before. Looks like a much better bet than using a Land-Rover PAS system as the front X member does not need to be moved. I think he should have welded tubes into the mounting holes drilled into the chassis though.

There was a twin crankshaft pulley available as an optional extra to run engine governors and generators (part number ERC5347). I saw one on a 109 army FFR series III

find yourself a servo assisted (inline) steering rack from a corsa - when you get one PM me and i'll send you a little box of tricks that negates the need to have it connected to the cars ECU

no photos, but it's a relatively easy task - the servo is built into the corsa column so can be spliced into the existing one if required along with a few additional support brackets - the output shaft needs to be turned down a few mm to suit the UJ - the black box just feeds the servo with a square wave at about 200Hz (this normally comes from the cars speed sensor) - varying the freq gives some degree of more/less power assistance

it's quite a popular column to use for adding PS, look up ebay for one - father in law has recently fitted one to his gardner douglas corba rep and he's more than chuffed with it

I'll fit one to the S3 that I'm doing at the moment, will take some pictures then - but not till the weather improves
