I think generally its under 20 whatever you do, under 10 around town (dont quote ive not had one) and personally id want a 200tdi as my kinda reachable dream engine, a well sorted 2.25 is liveable with(my daily drive) (and mine isnt great) but a 2.5 na in good nick also seems a good engine, I think 8hp more but in real life thats 10-15% ish which would be noticeable ! Not too sure what your asking but hope I helped:)

Iv'e run 2286 petrol and diesel plus a V8
2286 petrol 12 to 20 max. Average around 17
2286 Diesel 23 to 30 average 28 but slow as f$$k but I ran one for over 30 years.
V8 14 to 22 max so smooth but it was dare I mention a coiler

I agree with Divie, having run and been around a lot of older Land Rovers. 20mpg is the top end, but expect to average around 16/17 depending on usage.

When I replaced my Perkins in my old S11a 109" with a V8 I used virtually the same fuel as my brother in his 2.25 88" with the advantage of a heck of a lot more power and the ability to trundle along at 85 !! (quite scarey when you think about it, despite the 6cyl servo assisted brakes)

Remember, that the 2.25 petrol is still a great engine for what the Landy was built for, off road grunt. Remember it was designed 50+ years ago so try compare it with modern day cars.

Those of us with TD5s Defenders are still grinning if we achieve 30mpg regularly (my average when I last momitored had crept up to around 28)

A standard petrol will tune up very nicely given a bit of money and patience. With ACR stage 2.1 head and cam and a Weber DMTL ,overdrive and RR difs I get 19/20mpg round the hills and between 26 and 30 on the motorway. It will happily do 80mph and sets off well, is nice and torquey off road. I've only got less than 18mpg once, that was racing for a ferry on the continent, doing silly speeds, never again, too scary in a series!

It is a full tilt but has a big rollbar that weighs more than a roof, I have a heavy right foot.

ACR website: Land Rover Engines-Land Rover Components-Prices prices for heads at bottom - get the 2.1 head and the cams.

If you want to go fast get the su carbs, if you want to go fast _and_ save fuel get a weber DMTL for a 2.25 or 2.5 - you can get em new from fastroadcars.co.uk - you will need to get hold of the manifolds off a petrol 90 and do a bit of cut-and shut work on the exhaust.

I can't really remember which part made the most difference...

The 2.5 N/A is a good upgrade, similar power to the 2286 petrol, but 30-35 mpg, and a very similar engine - simple to fix etc. If you're not doing big miles, an upgraded turner head, big bore exhaust and KN filter will give you more oomph with the 2286 petrol. With overdrive and 7.50 tyres mine was happy at 65. Electronic ignition is a good upgrade too - no points to go off.

Right ok, so I may get 35 with the old petrol 2286?

I love my 19j although it will be minus its turbo that's if I even decide to fit it very low miles on td engine 35000.

But sooo very many are doing engine changes, can we do a vote

Original yes
Changed no? Lol
