Hi ,
Am looking for a replacement transfer box for my Series 3 , what I am keen to know is what sort of price I should look to pay for a secondhand unit . Have had a look on e-bay , and a few forum "For sale" sections , but know is currently out there for me to gauge the price .
Thoughts appreciated
Cheers
Steve

if you need a new transfer box it might be worth considering a new one from Ashcroft.

iirc their box gives you higher gearing in high range but leaves the low range the same so your top speed will increase

Biggest problem buying gearboxes from ebay is guessing there condition might be worse than what you have.
The transfer case is quite simple to strip examine and rebuild.
Re not engaging gear check the selector shafts are not seized and lever not catching on floor plates or bulkhead.
Is there oil leaking into handbrake drum? The bearings on this shaft are tapered and there freeplay is adjusted by shims in speedo housing , two things can happen which gives it too much free play one the nut behind the propshaft at handbrake drum slack , second circlip on output shaft at front output end failed .

Yes best option is to rebuild the one you have, once you have the thing out it's not much more work to strip it down and sort it .

I have a spare transfer box from a series 3 I had a few years back. I bought a replacement gearbox which came complete with transfer box, I kept my original one as it was working fine.

I paid £350 for a box and trans box with o/d. All in very good nick and no leaks etc.... It drove very well and made no noises etc... They are out there for the right price just buy from someone decent (not easy sometimes!). But as others have said, rebuilding the boxes on a series isn't too hard with the right advice (James Martin helps a lot :D).
