Evening all.

Rebuilding twin leading brake set up on the front of my late series 3 88.

The snail cam kit came with silver and dark coloured snails. Does it matter which ones are used on the 11 inch tls set up?

Ta.

Seems logical

I've rebuilt one backing plate up already using black ones, so should probably change to silver which are on there already. Stub/hub/swivel not yet reassembled so not too much bother.

James, are you still rebuilding gearboxes? Nothing 'wrong' as it is but as part of the resto...

I have recently just done the same, can't remember which ones I used but can have a look tomorrow as they are not fitted yet. Have yours got the oil catcher on, as I bought mine from a breaker not sure if my set up should have it they are from a post 80s 109. I have looked at all my different PDF files and manuals but can't find a definate answer, wouldn't mind picking your brains on this one as I want to get it right.

Yes, mine has the oil catcher ring. I'll get some pictures up later.

I believe that the post 80 swb and lwb share the same front axle so I think you should also have the catcher :sly:

does your set up have the retainer ring? as the only drawing i have does not show it but shows the oil catcher, they both seem go in the same place.

Very helpful, thank you David. I think I ought to revisit my previous efforts to make sure they're correct! ;)

Is there a technique to get these bastards together without stripping the thread out if the post thing?

Getting the snail over the shoulder straight is a right pain!:rolleyes:

Yup, snapped a bolt myself. Bits went everywhere! Fortunately had a few spares...

I read an excellent how to on the LR 4x4 forum, apparently the shoes have to go on a certain way as they are slightly different and if you get it wrong they won't adjust properly, also had all the measurement from the snails to make sure its correct, i will print off the piece and double check mine before they go on. let me know if you want the link, couldn't get me a picture of the oil catcher as thats all I'm waiting on for final assembly.

shoes do differ you need to ensure center of peg lines up with the center of snail ,they only will if correct shoe is fitted

Good to know. I'll double check my pads in line with what James has added.

In terms of the oil catcher, I think it's just the ring that goes over the stub axles and attaches to with the back plate, I think you put up a photo of it previously. That's all I'll be able to take a pic of.

Thanks, the manual has it labelled as a retainer ring? I though there might be another piece also
