It's about time I started, I think.

Since our cats won't be thrilled with the traditional security method of a sheepdog or three in the back, I guess we'd better at least get the door locks working, together with the driver's window latch...

The little thumb-flip doesn't do much - it makes the outside handle a bit "stickier" to operate, but still openable. The key rotates in the lock, but doesn't make any difference.

Strip-down, clean, lube? Or is something in there knackered? The doors shut really crisply at the moment (only 42k from new), and I don't want to lose that...

you could try some new barrels for the locks from craddocks et al, don't think they cost much

iirc you can get three like keyed barrels for around a tenner

in case you didn't know there are some other things you can do to improve security, there is a chap makes a handbrake lock for series vehicles and there are a few good pedal locks about but they seem to be relatively expensive.

Ive just renewed the barrels in the locks and its not a hard task. The only problem was I got the same one for the back door and thats completely different. No problem though as I just kept the original barrel and swapped just the pins from the new one. Once this little  project becomes desirable to the tea leaf I intend to fit central locking to the three doors but instead of the actuator going in the doors like a normal car and operating the existing locks I will fit them in the bodywork so they throw a half inch bolt into the door frame and dead lock the little darlings out.

Wont stop a brick through the window though.............. :(

PS. dont put anything resembling oil in the lock. The crud that had solidified in mine was orible. A puff of graphite dust if absolutely necessary but you shouldnt need anything.

You can crush up pencil lead, tis the same as graphite dust ... cheaper too

Have a look at 'Hykee' Locks ...

or the 'Safeways D120' locks ...

I don't think it's just the key lock. The thumb lock inside doesn't do much either.

My thumb switches wont do anything at all without a damn good slam. Same when locking up. If its not shut properly the key wont work.

PS. Try smashing up coal and mixing with soft mud to lubricate the locks its almost the same as pencil lead...........:lol::lol::lol::lol:

The doors shut well - they just don't lock...

Proper Solihull high-tech!

I only found out about the slamming bit coz I opened the door then hand turned the clasp in the door edge as if it had engaged the striker plate properly (as far as it would go) then hey presto the thumb turn worked.
