Default Starting Help Please !

Hi , i was wondering if you guys would be able to help me again, oK Land Rover series 3 petrol had starting problems so i replaced the following : points, distributor leads, alternator, all the earthing straps and added an earthing strap from the back of the starter motor to the chasis, oh and also the battery for a new heavy duty one.

then for a week started fine hot or cold , wet or dry.

but this evening on way home started fine, drove for about 1/2 mile and engine cut out, plenty of petrol in it.

turns over fine, but will not start.

any ideas

Ahh also forgot to mention, sometimes when i was trying to start it would turn key, ignition lights would come on, but the engine would do nothing not even try to turn over.

is it sparking at the plugs, if the sparks good its probably fuel, you may need to strip the carb to check jets, float setting below is a lionk to manuals download

if it wont turn over has the battery discharged? loose connections

Do you have a multimeter? If not get one because they are good for pinpointing electrical problems like discharged battery, bad connections, faulty ignition switches and starter solonoids. I think you've probably got two seperate problems - an electrical problem with the starter motor circuit and something else which is stopping the engine from starting when the starter motor does work. Take a spark plug out and connect it up to the ht lead, then earth the plug against a metal part of the engine. Turn the engine over and check that there is a good spark. If the spark is good pull the fuel inlet pipe off the carb and turn the engine over - fuel should come out. Watch you dont set it alight though! If that's O.K. it's probably a carb problem.

i had the same sort of problem with turnign the key and nothign happening (mines diesel though) but what i found it was, was where i had been offroading a lot of the wires and leads where caked in mud which obviously doesnt help the flow of electricity so i cleaned them all up and seemed to solve the problem, worth a try as it doesnt cost anything to put right!
