hi help needed i have just replaced the chassis on my 1972 series 3 swb diesel everything was going fine until when bolting the bulkhead back on i stupidly knocked the wires off the ignition i looked online and in the book but the book shows 4 connections but the lucas ignition has 5 terminals and there are 5 wires managed to connect them so she starts ok but the lights only work with the key turned off any help would be great

thanks

and its a negative earthed landy

i've bin playing with my ignition switch recently, remember the books says "when removing the ignition wires make a note of where the terminals connect to as there is 5 terminals and 4 wires"...... i've still got mine hanging out the dash so will take a piccy tomorrow for you....

cheers for that what the book says is brown/red t1 white/red t2 white to t3 and brown to t4 .i also have another brown wire?? .the brown/red and one of the browns have bigger spades than the other 3 also none of my dash lights or head/tail lights work until i turn the ignition off these all worked perfect before the wires were pulled off

still stumped with the ignition have left it just now been away getting another heater blower as mines is goosedjust tried it there with the key in but the ignition not on i get a faint blue light from the main beam my headlights come on and taillights no oil light

reet, forgot me camera but had a look at the back of the ignition switch and mine is connected as follows:

1: Brown
2: Brown with red stripe
3: White
4: White with red stripe (two wires come off this terminal, both white with red)
5: nothing

mines a diesel so might be different for a petrol without the heater/glow plugs

cheers for that am still at work just now but will change all my wires when i get home and let you know i just wonder where that extra brown wire comes from. and is the brown/red wire got a larger spade connection on your ignition

cheers

cheers for that doobie all working the dashlights oil pressure charge light and best of all the cold start the old girl starts amazing now that works .only thing is still stumped on where the thick brown wire goes but i will find out eventually

the connection for the heater plugs works since i changed the wires to the ones you gave me .going over the wiring diagram agian to see if i can find where the brown wire goes

maybe its an add on by a previous owner, could be anything!! i had a wire coming direct from the battery to between the drivers legs!! fook knows what that was for!!

Hi all, sorry to revive a very old thread but I just went to move my lightweight and realised some w****r has tried to hot-wire it! Steering column cover on the floor and wires everywhere.

I've had a good read online but haven't been able to work out which connectors people are referring to. Luckily it seems I've got the same coloured wires as everyone else so that's a start (Brown, brown/red, white, white/red).

1: Brown
2: Brown with red stripe
3: White
4: White with red stripe (two wires come off this terminal, both white with red)
5: nothing

Saw that post from Doobie which looked pretty handy. Just wondering if anyone can tell me which connectors the numbers refer to?

Cheers in advance.

petrol or diesel?

I had a problem with a none standard ignition switch but managed to wire an original in using a battery tester to see when each terminal came live

you need 5 if you have a diesel, or I did anyway :D

the terminals are numbered on the back of the switch, you may have to take the dash panel off or the switch off to see them.

Oh right that's great thanks Honolulu, I didn't realise that. The ignition barrel is exposed now so hopefully I should be able to see the numbers.

It's a petrol one, so I suppose that's why there's a spare connector, if the diesels have 5?

that's my understanding, diesels need the extra one for the glo plugs, see how it goes, but you may ultimately have to do what I did to make sure everything is on the right terminal

probably easier to take the dash off if you need to see better, if the lightweight is the same as the series 3 and the ignition and steering switch have those shear bolts they are a pain in the a$$ to get out and you would probably need new bolts to get them back in

Interesting.....
The book says:-
brown/red to terminal 1
white/red to terminal 2
White to terminal 3
both brown leads to terminal 4.
Mine's a petrol so I can't comment further!
