Right then ive recently acquired a 1967 series 2a land rover and thought i would share this with you all, now my 90 is almost finished -

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/project-1989-90-bruce-197591.html

i brought it as an unfinished project, its pretty tatty not 100% original but then again what is thats suffered 46 years of heavy use. luckily its fairly solid and hasn't actually made it onto the road since the chassis was replaced a couple of years ago (not galvanised unfortunately) just needs the paint touching up where brake fluid has blistered it, the bulkhead has been patched in the past unfortunately straight over the bad stuff i reakon, so thats going to get redone along with some new metal where the clutch slave pokes through (something to do with the 300 Tdi under the bonnet ) ) and the front panel needs some attention the bottom is going to be replaced. the doors need some welding to the bottom corners and one of the door tops is cracked need to look into wether to replace it (have a dabble in some ally welding/soldering) or replace them with the proper series type.

the two of them

Front panel corrosion,

started to disconnect the EGR,

Damaged door top,

Sam :)

Looks good :) I'm after a set of those mud flaps with the lettering on for mine, must do a search :) What's the chassis like on yours?

I may have a set of those mudflaps somewhere sam, I know I didn't bin the pair I had as they were decent but whether or not dad has is another matter

Will see if I can find them tomorrow

Ah, thanks very much :) That would be great :) I just think they look better than plain ones

looks good, are you going to keep that steering wheel or put it back to stock?

Well not too sure really its pretty tiny that one and could easily become very awkward manoeuvring. there is another one on the boxes of parts that came with the landrover but its in pretty bad condition, seems to have cracked across the horizontal spokes not sure whether its structural or just the surface finish but as i cant quite understand what its made of maybe pictures will help.

is this common on this type of wheel ?

Yes very common, there is a metal core, so it's not all bad. I followed a wheel restoration thread when I did mine up, with the cracks, use a hacksaw to cut an inverted v ie thin on the exterior edge, and a couple of mm thicker towards the core (not too deep though) then use a flexible filler to fill the cut / crack (think I used jb weld) then sand the whole wheel to remove the black sludge, then paint with plastic primer, top coat of plastic gloss, then clearcoat. Worth the effort and clean hands after driving the landy!

Thanks thats good news then, ill bear that in mind for the future.
got a few things done tonight,
stripped all the bits off the wings (chequer plate, lights, brackets and numberplate) then started to sand but too messy for inside the garage, plan is to make the most of the weather and do it in the garden.

then i moved onto the tailgate, it seems to me an ex military piece with all the tool brackets on (biggest giveaway is the hundreds of layers of nato green paint) scraped the bulk of it from off the internal panel and then set about repairing the hinge, it had snapped on on the pins so had a tendency to fall of when lowering it i planned to fit a new one but persevered and cut the head of a bolt and welded it on seems to do the job fine just need to drill the hole.

i will probably remove the brackets as some seem to be missing, and it will make painting easier,

more work tomorrow. Sam:)

Is that the original tub? I seem to recall the number plate lamp behind on the other side except in later series 3's and I see it also has the later style land rover badge

yes i guess that means it is a series three tub then, suppose it could swop the light around to look more original dont like the badge either so going to get the ally ones.

Todays progress, started off my driving it onto the drive and cleaning the gearboxes and footwell some brake fluid has been leaking and wanted to remove as much as possible so its nicer to work on and minimise burns.

After being left in the sun to dry off a little it went back into the garage and took off the bulkhead,

not too bad probably end up changing the drivers footwell two top panels and the odd patch,

Shot of the mechanicals,

and all tidied away ready for more work tomorrow,

dont worry the horrendous leather rover seats wont be going back in there waiting on a one way ticket to the tip ;)

Looking good :) Fling the seats on ebay, get a bit of money going towards the landy :)

yeah it was on the cards but not having the best of luck with ebay at the minute sold an engine he was meant to pick up last weekend but no contact since and he seems to be ignoring messages. need to clear some space you see so i can remove the tub to paint the chassis. :(

got a little done today,

started by lifting off the tub and carrying out a small repair to one of the tabs that the back of the tub mounts to simple straighten and weld job, easy now i have my new mask :D (sorry no pics of the repair)

then after inspecting the chassis and cleaning any loose paint or surface rust set about getting some paint on it,

chassis is nice and solid, the parabolics and axles will get the same treatment once ive sorted out some parts for them. hopefully get the tub washed undersealed and refitted tomorrow, so i can move about again,

Sam :)

got some more work in today, started off cleaning the underside of the tub and then put on some waxoil,

cleaned the crud off the tank and got that refitted pretty bad time to get cramp when propping up a 3/4 full diesel tank wedged against a wall but oh well its back on now.

tub refitted,

then set about attempting to fix my broken door top,

used some aluminium repair rods from frosts, seem to be ok bit messy at the minute but tried to pull apart the door and couldn't just needs a quick sand and a bit of filler.

:D thats all folks
