apologies for my lack of accurate descriptions of the problem, i am a complete numpty when it comes to the engine but here goes

when i turn the key to stop the 1972 beasty the engine carries on turning over for a few seconds, as if it trying to grab hold of the gears (i always turn it off out of gear, less of a problem when the clutch is depressed and after a short journey) is this summut i should be majorly concerned about or should i add it to my 'be reyt' list?

If it's petrol then it's running on - coked up cylinders can cause this, the hot deposits can ignite fuel. Some carbs have a shut off solenoid which cuts the fuel to the slow running (tickover) jet when the ignition is switched off which, if you've got one, might have failed. There's a similar cut off solenoid in the diesel but I'm not sure where it is.
 
Dieseling can be:-
Carbon build up
Timing
Carb depending on type
 
Sounds like running on 'cos the timing is too far advanced. Loosen clamp at base of dizzy and rotate body of it slightly in the direction of travel of rotor arm. Trial and error will get it right.
