Hi all.
Well heres the new project I have in the workshop at the moment. I owned one as a kid (14) and have always wanted one since so 12 years on I came across this bargain.

Im not sure why it has a turbo on it. any help would be grateful. my understanding is that this engine shouldnt have one, probably cause more problems than anything else.

Should I put it back to standard or do you think the turbo safe to run on this?
Also does this look like a botch job or is it like a turbo kit you can buy for them?

Apart from the turbo issue its a pretty straight forward resto i think :).

Any input would be appreciated
Chris.

a fair few years ago there was commercially available turbo conversions about for the 2.25 diesel, i've seen one or two of them on ebay over the last couple of years

there was also a lass on OLLR that owned one

i know nothing more than that about them though

There was a number of Turbo versiona about pretty nippy back then strong engines. Not sure who did the conversion kits but come across a couple.

cheers for the input. This landrover came off a lass from down stafford way but i never got the chance to speak to her about the history of this series.
It sounds like it is acceptable to put turbos on them then? i wasnt sure if it was the done thing. i could imagine it could cause problems with the pistons and maybe the crank, with the added pressure n all?
Im sort of hoping someone with a high knowledge of series turbo engines may drop in on this and share his wealth of knowledge! :p

if there's no one here coming forth with more intimate knowledge you might try OLLR, no guarantee of any better knowledge but a couple of them may have tinkered with the one i mentioned (do introduce yourself first though)

i've a feeling they were a bit overstressed with the turbo but don't take that as gospel

I'd have guessed a 2.5 td, but these chaps know more than me, good luck with the new toy:)

I dont think the 2.5 td had that large vertical breather pipe thing on the front right hand side (looking from the back). Mines a 2.5 n/a and doesnt have it, only thought they were on the 2.25s

Best way to tell what it is would be look at the engine number. The 3 characters at the start of the number will tell you what it is.

Should be either :

10j - original series 2.25 diesel
12j - 2.5 N/a diesel
19j - 2.5 turbo diesel

thanks for the engine numbers,
im assuming no one would be silly enough to just bolt a turbo on without lowering engine compression, changing pistons (if needed) and fuel ratios etc etc. but then again, assuming things isnt good is it!

Had a good luck over it these last couple of days and stuck a new rad in to see how she runs.
New set of parallel glow plugs ordered and a water pump housing kit. (god these parts are cheap!) New lenses all round aswell and window seals
iv given her a good rub down and the body work is alot better condition than i could have asked for. Only a small bit of welding around the bulk head.
Off to get the paint on saturday but cant decide on a colour. Nato greens looking good up to now. Any other suggestions??

I may put her on her side first and clean/underseal the chassis. suppose that depends on how arsed i can be :)
