Question Gearbox problem

My series 3 gearbox has a problem, it seems as tho i cant disengage 4 wheeldrive in high ratio, the gearbox is out at the moment as i need to replace an oil seal, and both output shafts turn regardless of what ratio or position the 4WD lever is in, i know that in low ratio 4WD is automatically engaged, but in high ratio 4WD is selectable, the 4WD lever does not seem to go all the way down whilst in high ratio, and i can only get it down, when the high/low ratio lever is some were in the middle and then its locked in postion, meaning 4WD cant be disengaged! Any ideas?? Thanks in advance. Chris.

I seem to recall thinking my gearbox was stuck in 4WD when I was examining it on the bench. After a bit of head scratching I realized that with the gearbox out of the vehicle, the spring on the 4WD lever between the knob and the transmission tunnel which usually applies pressure to the 4WD lever pulling it upwards, can no longer do it's thing. With the transfer lever in low range I tried pulling up on the 4WD lever to simulate the force of the spring and then moved the transfer lever to high range and the 4WD lever popped up. Come on 'fess up, I can't be the only one to have done this!

If that was not the problem, I think you are just going to have to pull it apart.

Yeah, but I think wot he's saying is that you might need to apply positive upwards pressure to the 4WD selector as you got to LOW then back to HIGH to get the lever to do it's stuff when there int a spring there ter do it.

S'worth a go.
