Default Differences between series 2a and 3

Am I right in thinking apart from the vin and the year of manufacture, the best way to tell a series 2A and a series 3 apart is the non-metal dash on the series 3 and the front grill? I'm just interested to know as my heart belongs to the series 2's but so many people can't tell the series land rovers apart which is very annoying!!
If anyone can help I would be most greatfull
Thanks, Rich.

hi many differences i am afraid but heres a few .. visually ..flat hinges on doors, narrower sill panels under doors, head lights in wings but this also applies to series 2a models but they had a mesh grille not plastic, steering wheel has solid spokes, mechanically different too..all synchromesh gearbox and later models had a 5 main bearing crankshaft as opposed to the earlier 3 bearing.... all i can think of at mo hope its of some help. all above is series 3 features.

wind screen hinge is a big give away and less likely to have been changed sereies 2a have to flat triangular plates on edge of screen and bulkhead

obvious difference is the cab side of the bulkhead, a Series2/2a should have an all metal dashboard/bulkhead with the clocks and switches in the centre, outside is the screen hinges which are flat plates right on the edge of the bulkhead

up till '69 the headlights were in the centre/radiator panel, '69 they were moved into the wings, both types had a steel mesh grill

i think it was '69 when the steering wheel was changed from wire spokes to solid spokes also

a Series3 has a padded dash with the the clocks/switches mounted in front of the steering wheel in a plastic console, lights in the wings and a plastic grill, windscreen hinges were changed and moved onto the front face of the bulkhead

now none of these guarantee you have one or the other as over the years they may have been swapped by a previous owner (rot or damage) as needed to keep thier motor on the road, there are lots of little giveaways that can easily identify it's true identity to folks that know the details of the particular models/parts/years, the rest of us just have an idea, i'm still learning
