Freelander TD4 Engine Knocking Noise
Hi All
I started having a problem ith my 5 years old (circa 75,000 miles) 2.0 litre TD4 last year, when after a long drive (Harrrogate to Norwich and Back) I noticed a knocking noise/rattle in the engine bay. I took it to our local Landrover Specialist The Discovery Centre.
They told me that they could not find a fault and to let it develop as it was intermittent. After a month or 2 it started to get worse and the car became virtually undriveable. The knocking began when feathering the engine, but got to the stage where white/black smoke was belching out of the exhasut with a continuous rattle/bang as soon as the accelorator is pressed.
I returned to the garage and they found a fault on 2 injectors which were replaced. I collected the car and drove off pleased with the job done.
Then, the problem returned and was as bad as ever.
I returned to the garage, who were amazed, and had the car for a few days, before ringing me with no real answer. The fault codes were being showen either stationary or whilst beign driven, but the noise was still there.
The owner suggested I replace the other 2 injectors and hopefully that would solve the problem. Again picked it up, and all seemed ok, but after a day of light driving, it returned.
The garage suggested a software upgrade, and that ddin't help.
I think they have tried hard to solve my problem, but are at a loss as what to do.
My car is now sat on the drive, as I limped home today with smoke pouring out of the back of the car and the sound of a machine gun coming from under the bonnet.
Any ideas please???

Re: Freelander TD4 Engine Knocking Noise
hi, i have the same problem, they creamed me for two injectors, 1600 NZD !! plonkers. noise is still there, i replaced the airflow meter, the noise is still there.
today i took off the egv?valve? the airflowvalve anyway, the oil and dirt came oozing out and was completely gummed up...i cleaned the lot with brakecleaner and a toothbrush, took of the exhaust manifold and cleaned that too. what a bloody goo i found is not funny.
anyway, its pretty straight forward and you can fix it with a couple of sockets and a screwdriver. takes about and hour all up.
seems to have doen the trick for now but have not driven it far....
and guess what...now it has trouble starting up...
my service guy told me the best thing on a td4 is the bmw engine....but i am not convinced......its the only thing thats letting me down so far.
would love to read some more feedback on the starting trouble now...what sensoror pump will it be now

Re: Freelander TD4 Engine Knocking Noise
I get a "tick tick tick" sound from the engine which appears consistent with engine revs, thus when your stopped it'll go away, but as soon as you start to drive, the tick tick tick returns.
In March, I purchased a 2nd hand Freelander with 108,000Ks on the odometer (5spd,5 dr, petrol, 2000 make) with a regular log book service history. I had the timing belt/water pump changed recently as its recommended at 100K. The car is in pristine condition and i keep it garaged during the week as i cycle to work and only really use it on weekends.
Anyways, about 2 weeks ago, I get that same ticking sound when i jump into my Freelander on the Saturday, provided it has been sitting in the garage for the previous 5 days. Interestingly, I do some extra managerial or technical work for community radio on the weekends so I drive from Colyton to Padstow sometimes (about 1 hour, NSW, Australia), I notice that the noise will be there when i take off with the car on Saturday, but it will only last for about 15 to 20 minutes, and even less than that provided I get up past 90KM speed wise. It so far seems consistent that something isn't getting oil properly. hmmmmmmmmmm... any thoughts?
Interestingly, I note one post herewith states that this noise is consistent with light driving, as per that in my case.

If you can find a local garage with T4 diagnostics then that should identify your fault. Doesn't need to be a 4x4 garage, any former Rover garage should have one.
Last session I had cost £30 and pinpointed a failing MAF sensor. Money well spent as it took all the guesswork out of faultfinding, and I wasn't buying parts I didn't need.

Re: Freelander TD4 Engine Knocking Noise
Surely people who have spend hundreds or even thousands only to have faulty cars returned should be taking these companies to the small claims court to refund the money wasted on replacing parts that were not faulty? What other business would get away with this?
Who cares if the dealer appeared to be helpful. A smiling assassin is still an assassin.
