Ok a friend bought a disco the other day then rang me up saying its sounds really tappety. So i said i'd have a gander.

Pulled the lid off to find the rocker closest to the bulkhead loose and the shim off the top of the valve stem missing. Little bit of fishing to find the shim and i thought about putting it back together.

Then i noticed when i'd loosened everything and put the shim back in place that the was a huge amount of clearance on the rocker in question as if the clearance had never been set.

So i pulled the shaft to find it was snapped after the second rocker from the bulkhead.

My question is can you remove the tappets for inspection without head removal?

What other damage can be caused by a snapped rocker when mine went it just stripped the threads on the securing bolts so i helicoiled and was away again.

Not sure something else has broken here, any help greatly appreciated

Well thought i'd try sticking another rocker set in the truck to see if that made a difference to the supect rear rocker. So i went scrap yard hunting and after failing to find any 300 tdis decided to borrow the rockers from my defender.
Great idea but a massive failure opened up the lid on mine to find the shaft broken in three places and one maybe two of the aluminium cast securing point for the shaft broken - gutted so now i need two rocker sets one for his and one for mine.
Whats the best option i'm gonna need a couple of new securing bits and might be good to stick new rockers in there with fresh bushes.
Its gonna be landrover or second hand for the securing bits and new shaft and rockers are pretty easy to get hold of.
Any recommendations welcomed
