clouds of white smoke

hi there
just brought a defender with a 200tdi engine, it starts & runs really well but chucks out lots of white smoke, it doesnt seem to do it if cruizing at 60-70,mostly pulling away or at tick over. ive checked the pump timing which is spot on ,not sure what to check next ? thanks in advance for any replies.
