hi, new to forum and have just carried out a 200 tdi conversion into my 1989 90 after the old engine turbo said "NO MORE" i fitted a new crank seal in the back plate but left the engine alone. after 2hours driving with the new engine the clutch was slipping and oil running out from the bellhousing. took it apart 2night and drained a litre of oil from the bellhousing.

now, for the oil to come this far the large crank seal in the back plate has failed, causing all this oil to be in there, but am i right in saying that the crank seal on the block/crank main bearing cap has also failed?

i now have a genuine part crank seal to go in, but now wondering if i should do the main cap seals aswell whilst the engine is out?

any help would be appreciated

Chris

Yep.....2 seals, 1 in the flywheel casing (back plate?) and main crank seal on the block.

If the crank seal goes it will easily push past the flywheel seal as its up around 50psi. If you've got the engine out anyway definitely change it.

behind flywheel housing on a 200 is a large gasket this seals end of cap ,can be fitted to ealier engines too (cut of bottom piece)the cap does have seals but they dont seal all of cap

Hi mate, i have just the other day only repaired mine due to the same problem.

The first time it leaked i pulled the engine out and replaced the seal but not a genuine one, and it started leaking again after a very short time. So i went and bought a genuine seal from land rover and it is now sorted, but do the gasket between the bell housing and block using black sealant for engines also give the crank a rub over with some fine ish sand paper.

Ben.

I tried to get the flywheel to block gasket a while back and they were on back order everywhere i tried so i made my own, not perfect but okay so far.
Did you fit the 4 bottom flywheel housing to sump strengthener bolts.

whayt do you mean by the strengthener bolts? all i did was use another 19j back plate and whacked it onto the tdi

every1 just seems to change the large seal on the back plate and all seems well? but to me this is only curing half the problem.....correct? and how the hell do you get the ali spacer plate, between the sump and block off without disturbing the oil pick up?

got the spacer plate off, great, got rear end cap off, brill, came to fit new seals......c*nt of a job, AND!!!!!!!..... didnt need to take the end cap off..... to say i am p*ssed off dont come near, i have now split the main cap seals (non genuine) tryn 2 get them in, so ripped them out, threw them across the shed and went home!! so i will have to get new 1's, and if i cant get before the new year i wont be happy cos i have to go down england on the 2nd.... :frusty::frusty::frusty::frusty::frusty:

if your doing rear main cap seals uses silicone after cleaning well, most of the seals split when fitting ,then silicone around gaps on rear or use tdi gasket

so just use gasket sealer to seal the "T" piece seals if they split, correct? i mite have to go find them again. lol. how do you get them in without taking your knuckels off?

so throw them in the bin alltogether? i cant really see why it cant be replaced with silicone, cos its the large seal in the back plate that seals it, will see what happens at weekend

seal seals around crank ,but you do need to seal well around joins of bearing cap to block ,ived used silicone many times it works ,to fit t seals you need special tapered guides to help
